If the land routes are already established, its much easier to continue with railroad.

Ah, but the German lands aren't railroaded yet and moreover, even if they were, moving off the ship uses up our Caravans' movement points - thus leaving them undefended for a turn.
I completely agree with your tactic re: land routes once we have Corporation and the AI has RR - unlimited movement within the AI lands straight off the ship is pretty decent.

Luddite Confirmation Game
The year is 1560 and the first impression is stunning. When last at the helm, a struggling Republic was launched with 15 cities and 910k Population. Now I find a vast and thriving trade power with 27 cities and 14.89m Population. Hats off to my fellow rulers.
It takes a while to study this beast and devise a plan. It is decided that cash will be plentiful so the plan of SG[1] to focus on white goods is to continue, with two differences. Luxuries are bumped to generate more WLT-Monk-D growth; and extensive Xinning with two groups of five cities will get research to 5 turns.
Except in the deep boondocks with no naval support, camels are jumped to a full third line as soon as the second line gets shields. Then tickled to finish in no more than three additional turns. White goods build one turn then completed.
1570...Gift tech to Sue; Steam Engine --> Explosives
1580...Courthouse in Stephenson and Portsmouth; 100g, Hut; Persians announce overnight they have discovered Explosives.
1590...Swap Persians for Explosives --> RR; Courthouse in Cambridge; 244g Dye(d) (Canali--3 Forks); gift Explosives around
1600...Courthouse in Institute; 50g Hut; Tesla founded at (101, 103); 135g Gems(d) (Arkwright--Iron Duke) with "jiggling" to unblock supplies in both.
1610...Insist Germs vamoose; they do... Railroad --> Metallurgy
1620...Harbor in Institute; Sewer in Bee; Colosseum in Bessie; Marketplace in Kay; Temple in Banting; Darwin Started in Bridgewater and specialists reset to taxmen and stop Xinning. Also, postpone deliveries until Darwin complete to not waste the bonus.
1630...Insist Germs leave again and they do; Germans now a Republic--maybe they will chill; 50g Hut; Sewer in Rocket; Aquaduct in Jenner; harbor in Popiel
1640...Courthouse in Banting; Bank in Bee; Gift RR to all; Complete Darwins!! Should get Industrial second and have offered Corporation. Population now 18.75 million.
Comments and Cautions
1) I have reset Arkwright to Eins to pick up the back end of Darwins. I have Lux at 50% to squeeze one more into Bessie. I have not set anyone to Xin, thinking that should start again next turn.
2) I alternated two groups of five cities in the Xin:
Group A--Trev'k, Hargrev, Crompton, Bee, and Jenner
Group B--Bessie, Watt not, Huntsmen, Eye, Rocket
Other choices are possible, too.
3)The ship chain is broken up to deliver to further out ports. We need more boats.
4) the Sue are Icy.
I doubt I will see another turn. This has been fun.

Not to quibble, but, with Darwin's completed, it is effectively 5 techs, actually, 4.5, as SG[1] had half finished Steam. I was lucky in that the AI made a timely discovery of Explosives that I swapped for, telescoping the time for RR. Having Engineers/RR will really impact the game.
@La Fayette
Once we have The Corporation our delivery bonuses will ~ double. A decision to be made is whether to hold off or use the smaller delivery bonuses to achieve the Advance.
I think you will enjoy your turns

I did enjoy it
LF looks around with help of costly binoculars and notices that:
- the Empire looks great , but:
- very few cities are still growing through WLTMonkD,
- few (15) engineers are at work, though we have a RR network to build,
- few (9) transports are sailing and no shipchain is active.
Therefore LF decides that:
- the 'science ' slider will be set at 30 lux, 70 tax (= end of growth),
- about 10 new engineers will be educated,
- about 10 new transports will be rushbuilt in our rusty shipyards,
- a nice shipchain will be established between Bee and Kells.
Short log:
1650AD: DARWIN provides Metallurgy + Industrialization
_______Spice to Arkwright = 164g
_______Gold to Kells = 135g
_______Silver to Pasargadae = 214g
_______Silk to Pasargadae = 224g
1660AD: Hut gives barbs
1670AD: Cloth to CedarCreek = 224g
_______Salt to CedarCreek = 79g
_______Spice to CedarCreek = 64g
_______Wine to CedarCreeeek = 128g
1690AD: Silk to Kells = 345g
_______shipchain Bee-Kells completed
1700AD: The Corporation
_______Jewels to Caernarfon = 576g
_______Gold to Susa = 222g
_______Silk to Cardiff = 420g
_______Silver to Cardiff = 685g
1710AD: Electricity
_______Jewels to Persepolis = 696g
_______Wine to Persepolis = 254g
_______Wool to Armagh = 350g
_______Jewels to Caernarfon = 594g
_______Hut gives 50g
1720AD: Steel
_______Sneak attack by Sioux legion in Wellington (our musketman dies)
_______Sneak attack by Celtic frigate offshore Kells ( = 6 units lost )
_______Silk to Caernarfon = 522g
_______Wool to Bessemer = 424g
_______Gold to Persepolis = 200g
_______Hides to Kells = 170g
_______Wine to Kells = 210g
_______Hut gives advanced tribe ( = Pasteurville)
LF uses his costly binoculars again before retiring and notices that:
We should be able to maintain a rate of 1 tech/turn through rewarding deliveries around Kells...
but both Sioux and Celts dislike that and we are now at war with both of them ...
luckily we have discovered Steel: '7 moves' cruisers should be fun to use against Sioux ironclads and Celtic frigates

La Fayette,
Well done!! The Republic Central Bank loves all those delveries
I thought about changing some camels to engineers and then forgot to mention it in the hand-off. I'm glad you caught that. And Women's Sufferage will give us some extra flexibility in dealing with misbehaving AI's.

Look at Empire:
What are we currently building?
Women's Suffrage.
This should really help us to function as a militaristic republic.
We currently have 47 active freights.
Definately a trade empire.
37 turns/tech?
17.85 million people,
5486 gold!
Might want to infiltrate our upcoming enemies.
Once we take over a few cities, we can roll over each
empire in turn.
We can leave a zoo city, and seek alpha centauri.
Rushby everything and press enter.
1720 AD
Research Refrigeration- select Electronics
Rush a few banks and marketplaces.
1730 AD
Smack Sioux caravan.
Subvert Toledo.
Get Leadership.
110 coal to Hlobane
320 gold to Kells
172 gold to Kells
234 gems to Cardiff
Launch Iron Duke 'expedition' to Germans
Continue rushing demanded caravans, as well as food for wonders.
1740
Finish Electronics- select Communism
Sioux land Dragoons, seize Wellington, metallurgy.
Sioux sink transport with ironclad.
They shall pay.
Bribe sioux ironclad
Barbarians revolt in Rourke's Drift.
462 silk to Carmethon
230 cloth to Carmethon
188 salt to Carmethon
Should get Communism next turn.
Plow food freights for Hoover Dam
Next up, Women's Suffrage.
Pounding out the freights here.
1750
Communism start Refining
515 Silver to Cardiff
Begin the blockade of the Mongols, shell Dead buffalo with cruisers, knock down city defenses.
Cruiser shells Three forks, gains veteran status
Massive Barb invasion near Booth
1752
Finish Refining, Select Combustion
Spanish Sneak attack Toledo, destroy musket.
536 Silk to Kells
336 Silk to Cardiff
636 Spice to Carmethon
Bribe Persian IronClad
Attack Celtic IronClad, lose.
Vet Cruiser Shells Three Forks, destroys musket, Engineer.
Food Caravans feed UN in Trevithick.

Democracy not offered.
Select Theology.
200 Coal to Dead Buffalo
168 Wool to Slim Buttes
512 Silk to Kells
504 Silk to Cardiff

Incite Revolt in Bear Paw
Steal Democracy.
Sioux have no operating harbours.
Reinforce Toledo with Spanish units.
Bribe Celtic Crusaders near Big Mound.
UN founded in Trevithick!
We promptly stiff the dues.
1756
Persians sneak attack, kill engineer.
Spanish kill diplomat.
Theology -
No Conscription available.
Research Espionage.
Bribe Big Mound. Steal Theory of Gravity
Cruiser sinks Sioux transport with 2 units aboard.
Dragoons capture Three Forks.
Bribe Spanish dragoons, find city of Salamanca.
Dump oil and Gold caravans into Kells.
Pop hut near poles, 50 gold.
Barbarian king captured for 150 gold
1758
Celts sink one transport with IronClad, attack another, which they fail to sink.
Research Espionage, begin Conscription.
Complete JSBC
Complete Women's Suffrage
Bribe Bactra
Bribe Salamanca
Subvert Hamburg
Dragoons capture Stony Lake
Dump caravans on Celts, half-way to Conscription.
The consul calls for my resignation, and I reluctantly comply.
Note, bribe expedition to Hlobane.
Forces on Spanish border, ready to charge.
Unstable situation in three forks, we may lose some units.
Currently have a treasury of 3298 gold earning over 1000 gold per turn.
12 active caravans available for delivery.
Shipchain to Celtic lands is a huge boon.
Xinning for science down to 3 turns per tech.
Need to techgift Sioux at some point, after they are rendered harmless.
19 techs still needed to beat game.

So long as we leave a few foreign cities to trade with, and keep collecting the bonuses, I'm happy with a conquest phase
I think next time we should play a harder game... with no Xinning allowed! Looks like we should be able to land by 1850 at worst!

looks encouraging with the woman's suffrage, as all cities now will have 0 unhappy people from units abroad. seems a rather militaristic turn there don't want to completely lose sight that this is an AC game Also, i see that we are now starving Arkwright - will be out of food in about 3-4 turns at current rate. Another thought - we have the UN - we can force civs to back off from time to time to protect our transports to reduce the need for all those cruisers out there. And of course bribing coastal cites can do that too

Edited the post, because I inverted Combustion-Refining.
Also, Hoover Dam completed 1750.
SCG:
I increased the science to push for espionage and forgot to shift Arkwright.

So long as we can get enough trade bonuses out of the surviving cities to get to AC, I'm happy.
*STYOM shudders at the thought of having to deliver 30 x100g Freight to get each new tech, later on*

Don't worry STYOM - it's much harder to cut through the AI with Cruisers and Dragoons than with Stealth Fighters and Paratroopers

Count me out. This time really.
Two reasons for this:
1) I kinda tarnished whatever good reputation I had left as a Civ II player with my last, um, "performance."
2) Huge term paper in History pending, in addition to the rest of my courseload.
Don't worry, I might get involved with SGs again, though don't count on that until July or thereabouts.
