I cannot start the MP mode with MGE...
I want to run some tests in the hotseat mode, but I can't start a hotseat game! IIRC there was an option 'start new multiplayer game' in the initial menu, wasn't it? It is missing now. But I remember I was in MP mode with my MGE installation in the past.

there should be "Multiplayer Game" below "Load a Game" and above "View Hall of Fame". if it's not there, i've no idea what you could do except for reinstalling it :|

When you start a game and go into the options menu (Ctrl+o) what is the version listed?

If it isn't in 'Multiplayer' then 'hotseat' then 'start new hotseat game' then you haven't got MGE, or it is corrupted in some way.
Did you install the *ahem* patch that some nefarious person provides.

It is 5.4.0f 26-March-99 Patch 3
I installed that monstrosity  , but only from Civ2 classic to FW. I let MGE intact, IIRC.

Hmm does sound like the right version, probably just a messed up menu.txt Here's a copy of mine. Also might want to check your labels.txt and rules.txt
