Stupid "SpyWare Alert" popup starting to piss me off...
I've had it pop up at least 17 times over the past 10 minutes browsing the forums!
Seriously, ONCE is ENOUGH!
In my opinion, regardless of contents, a good site is no longer a good site once it takes to spamming people with stupid pop-ups. I'd hate to see 'Poly go down that alley.

Re: Stupid "SpyWare Alert" popup starting to piss me off...
The Britney "Picture Gallery" add is also getting to me (Not because of its contents! I swear! ) but because every time it pops upp, two more adds pop up and suddewnly disappear and pop up again.

Yup. Automatic logon and all.
I do not allow all cookies though.
Commission Junction ( www.qksrv.net) comes up as a restricted site, and their cookies are being blocked because they collect information which would allow them to uniquely identify me and monitor my activities. I don't allow that, so if that's how you keep track of who's already gotten the pop-up, then you don't have that information on me.

Is this the "your computer is broadcasting an IP address one"? That one is particularly annoying.

it's not CJ
do you get warnings when each and every cookie is attempted to be written? if you have that as an option, enable it, see from where they are requested, and allow them.
these cookies are for YOUR sake, so that you dont get more ads than what you should

You can set your browser to allow cookies for apolyton only if you so wish. Thats how mine is configured, and no problems here.

our pop-up ads providers are in some cases using cookies as well, to limit the amount of pop-ups shown. so they have to be allowed too if you want to get less ads

I don't trust other sites. If a few more pop-ups are the price I pay, so be it.

Usually no. I just set my policies and let the computer handle the rest.
Is it AdResolver (adsensorserve.com:8888) ?
It just came up on my privacy report as a restricted site who's cookies were being blocked.

yes, that's correct
the spyware popup originates from www.spywarenuker.com so you might see a related report on that as well

I see.
Guess I might have to consider allowing these cookies then...

Heh.
Well, for some reason, that kind of reminds me of a Dilbert strip I once read, where this salesperson comes in to sell a new computer operating system. In a rare display of vendor honesty, he explains that the product he's selling is more expensive and less reliable than the previous version, but "we're counting on your irrational need to always have the latest version."
Dilbert looks at him and says, "I hate your weasel guts, but I'll take one for home and one for the office."

Whenever I surf Apoly. I just put my ad-blocker on and no problem here. It also helps with other sites.

I would prefer to allow popups so that Apolyton can get a meager revenue, in the vague hope that the site will stay around for a while.

Amen to that brother!
I would rather close a couple of pop-ups each day than have Mark and Dan paying out of their own pockets to keep the site running on a daily basis (that is ... if they don't already).
They've already put a HUGE amount of time into creating and maintaining the site. Clicking the X in the top-right hand corner of a few windows is the list I can do in return IMHO.

I know, I know ... this has been said before and always refused by the admins, but.....
I think the best way to get money for the site would be to allow voluntary PayPal (or similar) donations. I sure wouldn't mind paying £10-20 a year towards this site* and I know I'm not alone in that regard.
* the 12th of this month is my 1 year anniversary of joining this site ... more than 2000 posts in one year?!? ... holy cow I'm a sad case

Hehe, I think a more likely alternative to the popup arrangement would be registration fees. Perhaps if Mark mentions that from now on people will stop moaning about popups.

Perhaps posters should be charged a small fee for each post they make?
hehehehe ... this would of course have the effect of driving the Spam Shark into extinction, but I doubt the mods would mind that too much.

Or run it like a debit card. People pay to post so many posts ahead of time. Put a limit on how much people can buy. People might still spam, but they will have to think about it beforehand.

As long as ads keep Apolyton alive, I don't care. Ads are as commonplace as junk mail or advertising hoardings.
Markos has already rejected our donations, and I hope this doesn't become a Game-Spot style site where you have to pay some abominal price just to see a game review. Good luck and hats off to you 'Poly.

As long as the pop ups aren't that intrusive, I don't mind it.
