it's at the point where this technology is so widespread that the law needs to catch up. it's like vcr's or recording songs off the radio or photocopying... once things become so easy and available it doesn't matter if it's technically illegal. artists still can make buckets of money touring and nothing will ever replace that.

Sure the RIAA sucks but that is no excuse for theivery. Face it: You didn't buy it. It isn't yours. Music is a not a necessity for anyone. "The man be keeping me down" arguments don't wash.

(*sigh*)
I'll have to remember the "accuse someone of being a DL" strategy next time I have nothing to say. Feel free to contact TPTB if that's what you really think.
Perhaps I responded too strongly. For that I apologize. But honestly, what does make you think I'm a DL?

No. You're a DL because you've registered less than a month ago, and you're already in the OT.
prepare to be hazed.
Tassadar, will you let me have this dance?

Who cares, intellectual property rights are mere conventions and when they can't be enforced, there is no point to them.
As someone who's been a good customer of the recording industry (I have a few thousand CDs and quite a few cassettes and albums) I'm sick of them. They never keep their catalogue up to date and they treat their customers and their artists with contempt. I'll keep buying Classical CDs from small labels since they tend to care more, but I won't blame anyone for filesharing.
I share a few old pop songs every so often and download some things I haven't heard in ages. I'd quite like the RIAA to go after me since I actually own most of the songs I have downloaded on cassettes or LPs which are sitting back in a cupboard in NZ.
The recording industry is a dead duck that shouldn't be propped up by the government.

Well, and I just posted to CivIII Strategy. Does that take the curse off it?
BTW, the Off Topic on these boards seems way busier than anything else here. I expected lots more discussion on Civ than anything else.

   naive little one.
You'll have to go to great lengths to become a part of this magnificent community.
A moment of seriousness: This is indeed an excellent community. The posts here are intelligent, funny, entertaining. It's no coincidence that people stay at the ACSOT for years.
Believe it or not, we have people here that have posted on this board since January 1970, when this board was launched. Then it was on the networks on the terminals on the old computers, and new posts were delivered by punchcards.

Agree that the current model is dead. However, I have yet to see a working replacement model that actually manages to compensate the artists. In the interim, I'm not convinced that the current "free for all" is justifiable.

I think Frogger is right, I don't believe it is genuine, but for a different reason. There are several spelling mistakes and such within the email. Official letters like this are run through spell check so the sender doesn't look like an idiot when people find the mistakes.
But yes, the RIAA does send out emails much like this one

Some clarification if anyone is reading this thread. After asking my sister about it, it turns out she received the letter as a letter, not an email. The email I got was her typing up part of the letter so I could see it. That is why there are a couple spelling errors and what not. Sorry for the confusion. I'll see if I can get her to scan the letter so you can see.
