Chicago is a city I really want to visit one day, looks amazing the way the roads and railway lines all converge there.

To a man, nearly every single easterner will say that Chicago is not a part of the midwest.
"I don't understand how this thread reached seven pages..."
It's only on the third page for me...
"The only way to improve the midwest would be to pave it over and start from scratch."
I wouldn't say pave it over - rather let the buildings crumble and return into nature.
Nebraska should be the world's largest nature preserve.

The best way to improve New York would be to give it back to the Indians. At least they might be more polite and keep the island clean

AH, Chicago is a great place to live, but kind of pointless to visit.
It is hard to explain, but Chicago is what might be called "a generic Big City". This isn't a bad thing, by any means. It is just that there is nothing that puts Chicago as THE place to visit.
It is a big city, but not the biggest. It is busy, but not the busiest. It is beautiful (particularly the skyline), but not the most beautiful . It doesn't have the best weather. It doesn't have the worst weather. It doesn't have any amazing tourist attractions. You see what I mean?
But these are usually only things you care about if you visit the city. Sure, NY has the statue of liberty, but how many New Yorkers have actually visited it?

That's because we want to claim it as our own.
After living in NE-lite, I'm SOOOO glad that I've come to the South. I've been missing a lot! I mean, who else has as good BBQ, Fried Chicken, and OH MY GOD Sweet Tea!

Monolith, yeah, that's true. I mean't salvage it for the people who live there.
But yes, I think everyone would be better of if we evacuated it and used it to grow food for the thirld world.

There's more to life than food - Imran. Plus, I feel I should mention that in the city I'm in now, they make the WORST food.
Plus, how can you pass up a cuppa chowdah?

MIng, don't you mean all roads lead out of Chicago? Having lived there for four years, I think Chicago is a nice city, with great architecture..it would be better if things stayed open past 10 at night though.. and if the trains reached more places and stayed open all night.
As for Nebraska: if people love the Mid-west so damn much, why do they hemmorage people to the East and the West Coast? Mid-westerners vote with their feet, and its surely the hell out of those little towns in Kansas and Nebraska. As for having the "real men"..we don't need white-bread breed red-necks..we immigrate out tough guys
As for Food: here in NYc I can find any cuisine, including good southern slaw and chicken and so forth (its called Harlem). You try to find the same range in Omaha. Good luck.

NYC has the advantage of every type of food being available any time of year. Everything's always in season.
All this silly chest thumping over particular regions. Pfff. There are only a few indisputably terrible, awful, irredeemable places in the U.S.:
AL-MS-LA (The stinky, musky armpit of America)
Los Angeles
Gary, IN
Eastern Shore of VA
St. Louis
The stretch of Texas between Dallas and El Paso
All that forgettable stuff in the middle...

Are you seriously trying to say that sushi is the only cuisine available in NYC?

There is affordable sushi in NYC, though as i said, for thr money I found Chicago to be better in the affordable Sushi category. Yet Sushi is not the only food available, and for cheap. I knw great Indian places where a whole meanl goes for under 10 buch as person..Salvadorean, Ecuadorean, Cuban, Dominacn,. PuertoRican places galore, great Thai, incredible Chinese (made with damn fresh seafood at Chinatowan), top notch Italian, good soul food (harlem), fine French and german (though they are not too cheap), so forth an so on...
And thats just in Manhattan...try Queens and Brooklyn (things are even cheaper there).

In the U.S. You won't find better Italian food in the than in Little Italy or American Chinese food than in Chinatown, NYC.

And Imran, you forgot to mention Chicago Pizza
New York has an excellent selection of many different kinds of food. Much of it is over priced, but there are some great reasonable places to eat as well. When ever I'm in New York, the food is the one thing that makes me glad I'm in New York.
But Imran is right. Chinese food... go to SF... Cajun food, go to the source in New Orleans... Mexican Food... forget New York or even Chicago for that matter... If you want a steak or a good piece of meat, you will find it in Chicago, Kansas City, or Omaha... not in New York.

Huh? The best soul food can be found in GA, which wasn't on my list at all.

Which is why I didn't have San Antonio on my list.
But that's just food, anyway. There's a lot more to a region than that, of course.

I'd actually say Alabama or Mississippi is better. Of course, going there is the problem .
NY has a lot, but the only thing which I'd say it is the BEST at, is Pizza, of course .

Chicago pizza is better. Any pizza served by the pound and eaten with a steak knife is a winner.
SF is about 30% Asian varietals, so we get a pretty good variety. 3400 restaurants in the area iirc.
