Building a road network
With Trade in 8 turns we can start building roads and reduce the capitol distance in Lemuria. So far the Minister of Infrastructure did not started the discussion himself. As every citizien has the right to do it I do it:
So let's see what we can build in the West, we have here four cities, in the North we have Wels, in the middle Pressburg and H Town and in the South Graz.
I would start building the road between Pressburg and H Town, that would cost 120 PW, and extend it to the South to Graz that would be another 180 PW, to 300 PW. The link to Wels would cost another 300 PW, so all in all this new North-South route would cost 600 PW.

The next project would be the Road from Pedrunnia to the West:
We have two options here, the South route to Graz and the North route to H Town, the disadvantage of the North route is that it is more expensive then the South route, as we have to build the road to Graz anyway. Over the South route the way to Wels is longer. In the long term I think we should build both routes.

The roads to the East are easier. From Pedrunnia to Colonia Locuta the road will cost 320 PW as the forest tile and the sand dune tile have a PW cost of 200.

The last road from Colonia Locuta to mapfipolis, just costs 120 PW if we follow the Grassland tiles.

do we really need to have a roadbetween pedrunnia and Graz or pedrunnia and H Town? we could just get by with one if we don't have a lot of public works available.
/me wonders how he missed the poll on changing the public works rate

I dunno, theres alot of rivers there, and i think we can last a little longer using just the rivers for quick movement. We can build a road network later when we can generate PW quicker too. Just my view.

I say we build everything Martin said in the following order:
Graz to H Town (180 PW)
PressBurg to H Town (180 PW)
CL to mapfipolis (180 PW)
Pedrunnia to CL (320 PW)
H Town to Pedrunnia (420 PW) - Link between west and East
Graz to Pedrunnia (300 PW) - Very low priority. we can still make things via H Town
Pressburg to Wels (300 PW) - Wels is not important. The unit flow will be very small
Martin, Congrats this thread is great

In a long term view a road network would be useful but for the near and mid-term future we don't have to think about this. The costs are huge! If we start generating PW it's certainly better used to increase growth and production in our cities.

I dont see the point in saving all that PW just build roads over rivers just for an extra movement point. Most of our cities are already connected with rivers, it would be a waste to focus our empire on building any of these roads now IMO.
Roads also give our enemies faster routes to our cities too.

a road network will be marvellous, but we won't have the ressources to build it now, especially since we are participating in the wonder race. we should better see, what can be done with those pw we have so far from conquered cities, iirc it will be enough for a single road tile on flat terrain, so where can that one road be place most effectively?

Yes it is true, that we don't have the ressources right now for building the road network, but that will change. I don't see any problem starting to think about a road network. Sooner or later we will build it anyway. A road network reduces also the distance between our cities and therefore also the distance to our capitol. That will make our citiziens also happier. Pedrunn already started to wonder if we should increase the PW tax for building roads.
In my opinion we should build first the road between Pressburg and H Town, because it just costs 120 PW, and we could first build the on the non river tile. So that would be the part with highest use.

i'd say we consentrate our road where
1. there arent any rivers
2. where the war is

To clarify something here:
A warrior has 100 movement points per turn.
In GoodMod for ApolytonPack you need on a tile with river 50 movement points, if the tile has a road you need 33 movement points. So on a tile without roads and without rivers you need on plains and grassland, 100 movement points. So a warrior needs here one turn to cross one tile. A warrior can cross 2 tiles with a river on in one turn. With roads a warrior can cross 3 tiles in one turn.

I agree with Martin that we should build a road between Pressburg and H Town first. That section has some traffic. However, a road between Graz and H Town is a close second.
Even with the difference between road movement and river movement, I think the links between CL and mapfipolis may be a bit of a luxury.
Besides that – great thread Martin

if we want to start out with a road between pressburg and h-town, then it should be placed directly south of pressburg, once we have more pw avaiable it can be enlongered (does that word exist?) directly south to graz for total costs of either 380 pw (going the shortway through the forrest, which i would prefer) or 300 when going around the wood. if you have a look at the map, this roadline will connect to h-town as well.

We have PW to make one road. I think we should start the Graz - H Town road in the tile withou river. It will really be a great help.

I think there are better things to spend our production on, but a road network *is* important. It will reduce capital distance penalties and facilitate troop movements. Therefore I suggest we create a reduced roadnetwork: only build roads where there are needed: only to connect the most important cities and where there is no river (or following the river creates unnecessary delay).
I propose a road from Pressburg to Pedrunnia, via Graz (and with that H Town too), as suggested in Martin's first two screenshots in red (except that the part from Pressburg to Wels should be scrapped). The cost of this would be 600 PW, the same as 3 Farms.
Roads over the river to Wels, mapfipolis and Colonia Locuta are, for the time being, a waste of resources and better spent on Farms and Mines. Our latest acquisition, Linz, is a little off-track but if we have some PW to spare we could consider a road through the Hills, from Linz to the main river (cost: an additional 520 PW).

On reading the wise words of CtP2 vets, I concur with locutus. A MAJOR road network would be nice, but Locutus' suggestion seems more feasible.

Do we have the PW to spare for Martins origonal plans, i would like to see lots of roads getting built(good enough for the Romans-so good enough for me!), but we should be careful to keep some PW back for emergancies for a little while yet. Maybe in key places first, then expand the network later.

As the Minister of Defense, I would like to require a connection between Wien and Graz.

As we have a good store of PW at the moment, I can allow the 580 needed for that connection providing we have another turn at 80% within the near future for farms, mines and trading posts.
