well I'm not sure I have played 10 of them
copied and pasted from off-topic
Baldur's Gate 2. I still play this game.
Fallout 2. Another great RPG. This is set in the post-apocalyptic future. It was a bit buggy on release, but still an amazing game.
Fallout 1. Just about as good as Fallout 2 essentually, just not as big.
Bard's Tale Series
Neverwinter Nights- this game isn't great at single player. But I have a lot of fun in multiplayer with this game.
Wasteland- old 80's post-apocalptic game for the C64- later made for the PC.
Diablo 2- yeah I know this is really an action game where you can improve your stats. But I loved it.
Planescape: Torment
Icewind Dale 1 and 2.
Diablo 1
Morrowind
The Gold Box series for the C64. It would be higher, but I can barely remember them. So how good could it have been?

Diablo 2 (same as Diss)
Might and Magic 2 (remember way back when?)
Ultima V (you can move diagonally -- wow!)
Ultima IV (a computer game where ethics are a major theme -- whodathunkit?)
Maight and Magic (the very first in the series)
Fallout II (what a loverly wedding -- I could just cry)
System Shock II (FPS RPG, damn good at both. DO NOT play alone in the dark!)

Baldur's Gate I and II (2 being a better game, 1 having a better plot and development IMHO) Both with a lot more RPing (in terms of character creation, philosphy, ideals etc.) than they seem, and quite possibly the most addictive game I've ever played. I don't think it's actually possible to do schoolwork with this game on your computer.
Phantasy Star I - the series was good, but almost nothing comes close to the original. Very addictive, I lost months of my life to this game.
Ultima IV - Another great Master System game, very big on ethics. You can tell a lot about a person by what character they play. Rule Brittania
Final Fantasy VII - The only one in the series I still play, very addictive, but what's with the names
System Shock II - Probably the scariest game I've ever played, I still have nightmares about big zombie creatures hiding around corners, or big robot thingys that scare the crap out of you when you realise it's escaped. Far better than SSI IMHO.
Then a whole host of Megadrive (Genesis, depending on continent) and SNES titles that were great (or not so great, but with much nostalgia attached) such as Landstalker, Chrono Trigger, The Secret of Mana, various Final Fantasys, and one of my favs, Buck Rogers.

I have never played any of the games listed in this thread (except Civ). I s'pose I can safely say RPG's never interested me. Yet I still felt compelled to read this thread and make a post.

Baldur's Gate 1+ 2 - I think 2 is the better game but i remember just going wow when playing 1
Fallout 1+2 after the patches
Arcanum - a bit unbalanced but full of choices.
Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny+Shadows Over Riva. played on the amiga originally but i just remember really enjoying them.
Honourable mentions for Eye if the Beholder, Bards Tale. Very dated and very much of their time.

Nethack (very deep)
Arcanum (for the role playing options)
Others I played aren't worth listing because they were not up to the expectation (includes Baldur's Gate, Morrowind and DiabloII)

Fallout(s)
Planescape: Torment
Baldurs Gate 2
Arcanum (definitely #1 for roleplaying options)
Wizardry 8
Morrowind
Classics of their time:
Bards Tale series
Ultima 1-7
Ultima Underworld 1&2
Elder Scrolls: Arena & Daggerfall
Eye of the Beholder series
Realms of Arkania series
Wizardry 1-7
Might & Magic 1-4 (5+ less well thought of)
Hack'n'Slash fests which still get branded as roleplaying because they have swords and spells in:
Diablo 1&2
Dungeon Siege
Divine Divinity

Final Fantasy III (released as FFVI in Japan) should be topping everyone's RPG list. Still better than the other games in the FF series, better than most newer games - they just can't hold their own against it. I still remember when I first beat FFIII.
And who can forget Zork I,II,III and beyond? Truly, classics.
Diablo II was fun
Zelda(NES & SNES) was great
An RPG for PS1 that I forget the name of - King's Quest __ or something like that
Morrowind
Many others I can't remember

1. Baldur's Gate
2.
3.
4.
5. Kings Quest V (although it's an adventure)
I'd say neverwinter nights- but I have a defective CD so it won't run... and I've played many of the old DarkSun games, but they were really sub-par.
I have also palyed a few smaller games that Ireally can't remember the neames of... Baldur's gate is the only one (produced in the past 5 years) that I have enjoyed and it's really good!

Because Baldur's Gate actually runs!
Most of the old RPGs (especially D&D ones) from 1990-1996 were trashy games that crashed a lot, didn't play well, were cheaply made, etc.
Before 1990 there were a few games... and I should probably add the shareware game "Moraff's World"as my second favorite- it's by Steve Moraff and is one of the best old RPG's.
Other good games that I never played (so I can't rate them)
Pool of Radiance, The Bard's Tale, etc.
I didn't start buying computer games until 1992... so my ratings are a bit skewed to games newer than 1990... although I have a PET 1979 machine that runs some really old dos games like cat, frogger, etc. I never got any advanced PET games... and I had a 1986 macintosh, but never had any games other than the style of "ghostbusters" and "beachhead"
