I think that the person whom is getting the upload feature should only get special privillages. Meaning "No-one" Can use it unless that person has been authorized by Ming, or MarkG, or some other administrator. It would make them post illegal files less often, making an ideal way to do things. Not the post count because what if a person needs to do it and that person cant do it yet it is a legal file, and cant because he/she is new. So I think the "Special Authorization" rules are in order.

Thats basically how it used to be. You needed to make a direct request to the admin for them to host a file for you. The major problem with this system is time - they don't have enough time as it is, let alone with the added responsibilities of checking each and every file that is uploaded to the server.

in some cases of banings, we dont go into specifics (in public) to avoid people thinking of doing the same thing
it's the same as why dramatized recreations of crimes on tv are a bad, bad thing.

Thats not such a good policy on a strategy gaming forum though. In the absence of fact, the people here will try to discover every possible combination that will lead to banning.

"possible combinations" should first be filtered by a human brain before being posted
i believe the terms/phrases: "illegal" and "related to games we cover" when used by most (working) human brains give two things as the most possible cases: warez and mp3.
NOT demo game screens...

Skanky has a point though Mark......this (and other issues) generated far more interest because no ordinary posters knew what had happened. A short sharp statement from yourself would nip a lot of it in the bud. To modify a well-known saying, a post in time, saves nine.

I think Ming was referring to the posts by Dr.Spike and War of Art - and quite possibly mine - just above yours.

Hehehe... Heresson admitted.
As for the actual issue, the whole system seems to be &%"@33 up. If people need to host files, they can at anytime look for a free web hosting service or use the services provided by their ISP. Also many schools, public institutions, colleges and universities offer free services to their students and staff, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem. I have no interest in hosting files on ACS, because there's better ways to do it, plus you have full control of your files.

For what purpose would people be uploading warez and stuff to 'Poly? I mean, there are much better ways to get such material. Maybe some people have some voice in their head telling them to do things that would get them banned.

Noobs need to upload files too. Case in point; back when Civ3 came out I made a map and wanted to post it here, but Poly was flaky and wouldn't play. So I headed over to CFC and posted it there instead - it generated some interest and it contributed to that community. However, I never bothered with the redt of CFC - I'm still a settler over there.
Deny people who have created material the possibility to upload here unless the spam their way to whatever first, and you deny all of the community interesting contributions. So I really don't support any poster-level ban on uploads. Stricter quotas? Perhaps. Not many maps/mods/saves other than graphic mods require more than one MB.

How much is there stored in the 'Poly upload? How much space do you have dedicated to that?

Some of my Civ3 Leaderhead sets are 20 MB, but I always had to send those directly to MarkG via a link to my website where I had uploaded them via FTP. I was unaware we could upload 20Mb files directly ourselves.
