OTOH, Deity did display the power of his aura on Saturday night. Mrs finbar and I were having trouble with our networked cable set-up. He walked upstairs into the office and the problem immediately fixed itself. No laying on of hands, nothing. It was his aura.
Thanks, Deity, you saved my life! Mrs finbar was getting very, very crabby not being able to access the internet!

Hey Deity. Something I meant to ask you the other night. Your game hosting problems revolved around the use of the router, didn't they? Anyone trying to connect with a game runs into the router and can't get past?
I, of course, now have the same problem. I can only host if I bypass the router and plug straight into the cable. Which isn't all that difficult, but it's a pain in the a*se. But I gather there's some way of configuring the router to overcome the game hosting problem. Any idea how it's achieved?

For Windows, no doubt. Will it apply to Macintosh?

Bugger, I forgot. Still, the principle is exactly the same, and what you have to do remains the same, but I can't help with implementation given my meagre knowledge about the mac. If you have a hardware router of course most of the configuration is done for that, which is independent of OS. The bit that may be trickier if you don't know how to do it is sorting out the IP for your machine. Let me know how it goes.......my housemate has a mac, and I did manage to set it up so he could use my broadband connection.

I've looked into the matter. It's a matter of configuring the router, accessing it via a browser. Which isn't all that difficult. Except that my router is a Netgear RT311, a fairly old model, and I can't access it via a browser as I should be able to. I get a "protected area" (or similar) message when I attempt the access. I think I might invest in a slightly more sophisticated router.

This thread is surely sophisticated enough to carry parallel dialogues. Oh, and that's dialogs for our North American chums.

The old routers use a CLI (Command Line Interface).......it is doable but not as user friendly as the current web interface. If you get a new one get one with an inbuilt firewall (thus obviating the need for any zonealaram crap), NAT, and DHCP. Then all you will need to do is set your machine to get an IP from the router (this is what I did for my friend in my house with the mac) and it is completely idiot proof. It will work like a charm 5 minutes after it comes through the door, and port redirection on decent routers is just a couple of clicks.
I like the Alcatel Speedtouch 510.......it's what I use.
Hope that helps.

Is the SpeedTouch cable or ADSL or doesn't it matter?

It's a dsl modem/router for use with dsl connections. Cable broadband is different........you need a cable modem.
Hmm, reading back, you said before you had a separate modem and router........so maybe you have a cable connection.
I don't know much about these, since they are not popular in Britain. Try and get a modem/router if they are available, though you will need LAN capability. IIRC an ethernet port comes as standard on the Mac.

Make for an interesting film title, that would. In the Stallone genre.

Speaking of which, as I told Horse last night, I won't be around tonight.
Oh, and if any of you lads bank online with the ANZ, beware of the fraudulent email doing the rounds that asks you to update your log-in details at the updated ANZ site to which they provide a link. The site is, of course, bogus. It's the same scam that they tried on Commonwealth Bank customers a couple of weeks ago. I bank with the Commonwealth, got the scam email, and picked it as a scam. Though many didn't. The fundamental problem for the scammers is that English is obviously a second language.
