is this wrong?
well im trying to find a cunning way of getting a brand new computer with no expense to myself. the current problem is i dont have enough money to do so, and i wont by the time i start school up again even if i work 20 hours a week(the max that they allow me usually).
so i was planning on spending all my money on a road trip and then delibritly destroying both my computers. then pleading with my dad that i cant go to college without a brand spanking new computer.
im already paying my own way for a good share of college, and will in the end wind up paying for more than he is, so i think it be nice on his part to give me a new computer...
anyway, am i just acting like a spoiled little child for plotting this, or am i really just playing the system well?

Why spend all your money on a road trip?
Either way, you better hope it doesn't back fire and you end up with no computer at all.

Why not just sell your old computers and inform the insurance company that you accidentaly dropped them from your balcony or something and cash in on them a second time?

I vote spoiled little child. Be a man, make a deal. Your father deserves better.

my dad doesnt make deals anymore because he thinks im an adult and i pay for everything i want. except i cant afford large expenditures like this, or when my car broke down two times. in fact if my mom hadnt bailed me out on my car i would have owed more than 2200 dollars on 2000 dollar car i paid for with my own money.
ill try going the deal route but i doubt that he will have any of it unless there is an obvious need for a new one.

this is just wrong in so many ways
and you know it.
grow up , don't use and manipulate the people who
care about you the most . you're lucky to have someone
able to help you with college expenses.
be grateful

i dont feel any more lucky than my friends who had their parents buy them cars, pay for their entire college, and buy them new computers before they left for college.
im more grateful towards my mom who works at stanford who is paying for 95% of my actual tuition, makes half the money my dad makes, and still finds it in her heart to financially put her neck out for me when i dont ask her to.

nice Rah... I couldn't have said it better myself. Get a damn job and be a man. I got a job when I was 14 in order to pay for my own first computer. The last thing you want to be is accountable to your parents anyways. And you're in college? Sheesh

What's wrong with the computers you already have? I've got a P166 desktop and a 486 laptop, and I'm fine with them. I really don't think you need a brand new computer.

Are you knowledgable enough to build a computer? Or do you need to buy a pre-built one? Just curious. If you have a job then buy it yourself. Buying components seperate is a lot cheaper than wasting money on a computer from a store or from a company like Dell. And even if you have to buy from Dell or Gateway, you can get financing so you can pay like 20-100 bucks a month. The positives from doing so are:
1. you aren't being a little spoiled kid
2. you are establishing good credit
3. the computer will be yours and you won't have to rely on your parents

will you be buying the kids expensive things when they reach their teenage years? would you really deprive happiness from your children?

My 14 year old buys many of the more expensive things herself... She works and earns the money. If she can't afford something... she saves for it and works more hours. It makes her appreciate things more...
Oh... and expensive gifts doesn't buy happiness...

youre right. everything that is expensive that i have right now i have bought on my own...
its just with all my budgeting and penny pinching and ebaying im still going to come up short for this expendeture. this is something that will not only help me in school but also make life more enjoyable by enabling me to continue to create music...
and i just feel resentful towards my dad because he pleads poverty to me while he takes 2 trips to europe a year.

Some of the weakest justification I have ever heard.
It's wrong and you know it... so deal with it in another way.

should i make a deal where i take out a loan with him and repay him with zero interest at a later date?
or possibly taking 10 dollars a week out of my weekly food allotment and using that to pay back a loan for my computer.
