Does anyone care what celebrities have to say?
How much influence do celebrities actually have over the general population?
I'm curious. It is a curious phenomenon to have so many celebrities come out for something. You know they didn't do this in the middle ages for fear of being beheaded
You always hear conservatives rant and rave about liberal hollywood.
But is it really that bad? I don't think it is. I think the average american ignores what most celebrities have to say anyways. In the case of females, men only care to see their bodies. No one really cares what comes out of their mouths.
And what are your views about pressure against actors to not express their opinions. Martin Sheen is taking a massive amount of heat. The show is slipping in ratings anyways. And the network doesn't want the ship to sink too fast.
It doesn't seem to hurt their careers. It hasn't yet that I've seen. This is good of course. No one should lose work because of their opinions.
I myself don't really care to hear their political views. They are entertainers. They are paid to entertain. Not bore with stupid political talk. Just because they aren't being paid at the time, doesn't mean they should stop entertaining. Lazy bums.
In any case I think conservatives are making a big deal about nothing.

I don't care, although they should be free to say what they want. Its about time though that people said to them what do you know your job is making stuff up.

Although I did hear one celebrity say because they had so much free time to read and inform themselves they knew more about politics than the average american. He may be right, but that is still a bit egotistical and arrogant.

That isn't the claim. The claim about 'liberal Hollywood' is that their message goes into the movies (which is obvious), and that most people treat movies as fact (which is a common complaint).

Snooze. If conservatives want to make conservative movies then they should go out and do it. They have buckets of money, don't they?

Not anymore than what I might care my neighbor, Bob, has to say. Are celebrities' voices supposed to carry more weight or something?

on a related note why is California so liberal now?
Have things changed that much since Ronald Reagan was governor?

The buckets of money are used on things such as taking over the world, not frivolous things such as movies .

Hmm. Let's see: Liberal states: Massachusets, California
Conservative states: Oklahoma, Idaho

Now, which group has loads of major universities, and which group is yokel-land?

I don't usually care what celebrities say, but if the celebrity in question is Britney Spears and what she is saying is "FP, I'd like to sit on your face" then I would take a keen interest rather quickly.

Obviously they are entitled to a opinion. That their opinions are printed and broadcasted is probably due to the fact that celebs sells, some more than others. Tabloid papers are filled with short texts about the most uninteresting things about them so why not print this **** as well?
There's some people that will believe anything their so called heroes tell them. However I doubt it has any real influence beyond the lumpenproletariat that doesn't matter anyway.
Probably it helps the celebs with their egos in some way. I don't think any apolytoners for example or people in general are really affected what they say. People might however see it as positive feedback when a celeb argees with them. In turn that might help their careers if it makes them more popular, if that's the case here is another question though.

Celebrities have the sort of world view that one expects from people with personality disorders.

The root word for actor is the same as the word for hypocrite. I usually do not give much heed to what hyocrites say. My father is a ww2 veteran and he is opposed to the war as are many (if not most) ww2 veterans still living. I do give heed to their opinions.

Obviously, celebrities have the right to express their opinions just like everybody else. However, they are just opinions, not based on anything. Can anyone honestly tell me that Martin Sheen or Janeanne Garofolo know more about the real world than Collin Powell or the President of the US who receive real info from the intelligence community?

It does not appear that GWB or Powell knows more, if Powell's presentation at the UN is anything to judge by.

Good idea! If Janeanne Garofolo took her shirt off, then I'd be far more likely to listen to her.
