It's this kind of thinking that is part of the problem. There's a BIG difference between a United Slavic State and this myth of a "Greater Serbia" perpetuated by Western propaganda.

There's also a BIG difference between a United Slavic State ruled only by Serbs and a true United Slavic State ruled by all Slavs.

It seems to be the done thing amongst the Serbian higher politicians. I am aware that Milosevic had many opponents and people who mildly irritated him in positions of powers 'eliminated from the equation'...

It would sound the most likely explanation GePap, it is the kind of tactic his cronies would employ.

The Swedish foreign minister was just 100 meters away, on her wait to a meeting with Djingic (forget my spelling). But I guess she has nothing to do with the assassin.

Again... another victim of Western misinformation.
There's a BIG difference between what Milosevic wanted and said in his speeches AND what the West translated and told it's short-attention spanned masses.
I don't want this to turn into a Milosevic threadjack though. Make another thread if you want to debate his involvement or lack-there-of in "ethnic cleansing" or other misleading catch-phrases.
Djindjic was a good leader who wanted more democracy and progress for Serbia.

Nit pick, nitpick, nitpick. It was a Serbian nationalist, though...
Anyhow, all those Balkans folks look the same to me.
There are even some people at this site who can't tell the difference between Greeks and Macedonians.

That wasn't quite where I was headed with my comment...
You see, A few years back, France and company bypassed the UN and convinced Clinton to use the NATO alliance to force Serbia to quit the Balkan conflict and, eventually, unseat Slobo. Whether you think it was justified or not (and a lot of Americans thought not), two facts are clear: 'old Europe' chose to ignore the UN (because of a promised Russian veto), and the United States chose to stand by its allies in spite of this.
Now, when we try to unseat a dictator that we feel are a threat to our interests, these same countries not only do not help, they actively block us at every step and whine on and on about our trying to undermine the UN. The hypocracy is blatant and appaling.

Despite the fact that I am anti-war at this point, I think TMM's post re: Bosnia & Kosovo is a good explanation (at least in part*) of the Bush Admin's irate reaction to Franco-German resistance.
* - the other bit being their unilateral tendancies, which includes a basic "to hell with what everyone else thinks" mentality.

I'm sorry if I got in the way of your attempt at a "blatant and appaling hypocracy of Old Europe" threadjack.
God forbid that anyone should deflect attention away from your rantings.

It's my thread, kid. If you look at the first post, it's where I've been heading from the start.
Sava is Sava, but I've come to expect better from you.

Aaah, that's nice.
Sorry I disappointed you.
NB: this might seem sarcastic, but actually it isn't
So ... how about those dead Serbian Prime Ministers and the hypocritical reaction of France and Germany to US action against Iraq??
Come on people! Let's try and keep it on topic!

TMM: you know, it is possible to threadjack your own thread. And that's what you've accomplished here. If people like our pseudo-Turkish friend were actually interested in this topic then you've f*cked it for 'em by appropriating the thread subject for something different.

Why would France want to get rid of Slobo? I can see Germany wanting to get rid of Slobo since he was beating up on their little friends the Croats. But what would France have to gain from having Slobo in the evil hands of the Dutch?
