Do you learn lyrics by heart ?
Hi there !
I wonder if I am all alone. I am trying to learn the lyrics of "Zoute uitval"(a dutch rap song ) and Björk's "Bachelorette" by heart. Maybe others will follow. It is for no use really, but I may have something positive to do while sitting around waiting for the train. And my brain gets trained.

I find you just pick them up by listening to them enough times... it's not really a concious thing to learn lyrics for the most part.

I try to learn the lyrics to many Rammstein songs. Which is really quite difficult, on account that I don't speak a word of German.

The one song I used to know ALL the lyrics to was "The River" by Bruce Springsteen. I seem to have lost it now though. Also, I practically knew the entirety of The Miracles "Tracks of My Tears" but now I'll be damned if I even remember the melody.

Hey cool !
Die Sonne scheint mir aus den Händen,
kann verbrennen, kann Euch blenden,
wenn sie aus den Fäusten bricht,
legt sich Eis auf dein Gesicht,
legt sich schmerzend auf die Brust,
das Gleichgewicht wird zum Verlust,
lässt dich hart zu Boden geh'n,
und die Welt zählt laut bis zehn !
Eins, hmmmm, hier kommt die Sonne...
Well, I do not speak Dutch, so it is not so easy to leran "Zoute uitval". These G's are all spoken as German "ch", "chesidenes is ches'chreve" !

one day i went to a concert sponsored by my local rock radio station with a bunch of kickass bands.
when rammstein got up, i was shocked when i realized i was singing along. i had no idea what i was saying, but i was keeping on beat.
now, after talking to my german grandfather, i know i was shouting some things i probably wouldn't scream in english
something about hermaphrodites (zwitter). man, when i heard that, i went home and translated all their songs. they're a sick bunch.

why dont u start with "Du hast"?
I like how chorus for "Adios" goes. I like trying to memorize music sung in foreign language.

becayse the english version of du hast isn't the real song at all.
hast = have
hasst = hate.
its a completely different song.

here are the two:
german translated:
Quote:
|
You
you have *
you have me
you have asked me
you have asked me and I have said nothing
Do you want, until death seperates you,
to be faithful to her for all days
No
Do you want, until death, which would seperate, **
to love her, even in bad days
No
* When Till is just saying "Du hast," it sounds as if he could either be saying "Du hast" (you have) or "Du hasst" (you hate). This is probably to give the song a double meaning, even though the official lyrics say "Du hast."
** There is another sort of double meaning here. If the line is read as "Tod der Scheide" it would be "until the death of the vagina" and not "until death, which would seperate" ("Tod, der scheide"). The whole song is a play on German wedding vows (Wollen Sie einander lieben und achten und die Treue halten bis dass der Tod euch scheidet? - Do you want to love and respect each other and to remain faithful, until death seperates you?). Instead of answering with "Ja," Till says "Nein," finally answering the question he said nothing to in the beginning.
|
english version
Quote:
|
You
You hate
You hate me
You hate me to say
You hate me to say
And I did not obey
Will you until death does sever
Be upright to her forever
Never
Will you 'til death be her rider
Her lover too, to stay inside her
Never

I tend to understand most of the lyrics in songs by american-english bands, but it is really almost imposible for me understand rap sogs.
Do native english speakers also have this problem?

I know probably between 100 and 200 songs by heart. I listen to music about 18 hours per day (including while I sleep) so it just comes naturally. Just listen to the words, and figure out what they mean. That helps me rememb0er.
I'd never be able to learn a Rammstein song by heart. Unless I can understand the lyrics, I can't memorize them.

I go to sleep only when I don't think very much.
I think a lot normally.
I don't think a lot when I listen to music.
Thus I fall asleep more quickly.

I sleep with music because I can not stand the tick-tack sound of my clock.
