It's October 2016...almost 10 years after WWIII...
Edit: DO NOT POST HOW LIKELY OR UNLIKELY YOU THINK THE SCENARIO IS!!! I do not care; that is neither the point nor purpose of this thread. Your task is to respond how you'd deal with the aftermath of the given scenario. God, if you have THAT MUCH of a problem with the given scenario, pick some other doomsday scenario IN YOUR OWN MIND NOT HERE and go off of that, as long as the end result looks similar to the end result of this given scenario. Sheesh...this disclaimer shouldn't have been necessary...
Thank you to those that at least played along...
The Scenario:
It's October 2016. Almost ten years have passed since World War III first erupted in ernst. While the Persian Gulf War II only lasted a few weeks, conflict also arose on the Korean peninsula and along the Indian-Pakistani border. While the United States and her reluctant allies are busy trying desperately to keep the penisula from burning in flames once again, they are simultaneously working with governments in the Middle East to keep their people from revolting against the established governments in favor of parties holding ultra-anti-America sentiments. India and Pakistan, while exchanging more fire than any time before since their last war, manage to keep from being enveloped in broader conflict with one another. This barely restrained posture lasts for a year and a half...
...Until the world is collectively blind-sided. Smuggled biological agents, stolen from an unsecure facility in the former Soviet Union meer months after that government's collapse, are released onto an unsuspecting village in India near the northern-most border with China. While it was suspected to be the work of Pakistani Muslim extremists, there wasn't time to do a through investigation...
...the plague had begun.
In a matter of days, cases of the disease are reported as far as Eastern China, Singapore, and Southern India. In less than a month, the air-borne virus had reached almost every nation on Earth. Although not a quick disease, it is highly contagious. After only two months, the earliest cases begin dying. Soon, mass panic envelopes the world. Governments and regimes destablize as civilians and military personnel alike lash out in fear.
Four months after that tiny village in India fell victim to the henious biological attack, 90% of the world's population is dead: 5.4 out of 6 billion. While the disease itself had a mortality rate of 67% killing over 4 billion, another billion died from the conflict and violence the erupted as a result of the outbreak.
The Questions:
It has been over nine years since WWIII and you are among the 600 million who survived both the disease and the "war." How would you cope? How would you rebuild? What did you do to survive? How does the world go on?
Discuss

Time of thread start: 12:31:06am
Time of Oerdin's responce: 12:31:06am
So in the 10 seconds it took me to reopen this page to view it, you read through the WHOLE THING, thought it over, and indirectly acuse me of trolling?!
Dissident: That's why it's called a scenario. I don't give a rat's behind how likely or unlikely or effective one thinks the scenario is, your only purpose here is to discuss what you'd do after the given scenario has played itself out. Now, knowing the rules of this thread, play along Oerdin and Diss...

*Sigh...*
Since no one else seems to yet be willing to give it a proper go...
Counting myself among the survivors, I assess my situation here in Reno. Being that it is a valley situated between high mountains and 4 access points, one in each aproximate cardinal direction, it is an easily defended valley. Gathering what supplies I can, I seek other survivors here. Likely, there wouldn't be too many in Reno, but enough that varied skills would be present. Once we've picked a spot to inhabit (one of the several hotel-casinos) and restored some electricity (generators at first), we'd begin seeking out others in surrounding communities. Fallon, Carson City, Tahoe, Truckee would be the most likely places nearby. As Reno's new population grows to a few hundred (2 maybe 3 hundred) we would expand the search to other more distant places like Las Vegas, Sacramento, and the Bay Area. Having influence in the Fallon and Sacramento regions would give us access to farmlands, allowing us to begin replacing dwindling food stuffs left over from before the war...
It might be 2009 by this time. Our population has increased to just over 3,000 combined from Reno to Vegas all the way to San Fransisco. We've sent small scouting parties further out, surveying the damage visually on the ground as there are no reliably usable airports (runways cluttered, services damaged). They find that seperate enclaves of survivors have also arisen in Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, and other points east. Our enclave is strong enough to support itself, but some of the smaller enclaves have taken to raids against one another. We manage to subdue the Los Angeles raiders, but further expansion requires more resources and supplies we simply do not have at present. Perhaps some of the military bases here out west are still supplied...
2014 has been a good year: We've made cordial contact with enclaves in what was the Eastern United States, Canada, Mexico, and even some radio contact with Europe and East Asia. The weather has been getting less than cooperative with the farmers, but wise population growth managment has kept our numbers from growing beyond our means. Medicine is almost back to the level it was pre-WWIII, but we still lack a sufficient number of professionals in that field and many others. Perhaps by next year we'll be able to setup the necessary infrastructure to make flights over the Atlantic and Pacific, exchanging specialists...
October 2016 hasn't been terribly good to us. The weather has grown increasingly bad in the Western Hemisphere. Some grumble about Global Warming, but not enough attention has been focused on weather research beyond forcasting. We'll need to change that soon before it gets too untenible. European enclaves are faring better with land ties to Asia, so once air supply lines are formalized, we should do better as well here in North America. The first census post-war was informally conducted late-spring this year. The world population seems to have reached 700 million, but we think a few enclaves inflated their numbers to increase their rations. Some Human behaviors never change...
There, I've provided an example of what I'm looking for in responces in this thread. I don't care how likely the scenario is, nor do I care if you're a pathologists or military strategist or diplomat or terror expert or historian. I only care about how you'd deal with being one of only 600 million survivors after such a devastating event. Now play along!

The way you can look at that part is that the extremists responcible didn't have a clue what they had; just that it would likely kill a few Hindus. Given the scary lax security in Russia shortly for a time after the fall of the Soviet Union, there's a possibility that some of their more scary weapons slipped through the cracks, showing up on the black market years later. The extremists likely wouldn't be given a users manual. If anything, they'll be given something as useful and informative as the Master of Orion III User Manual...

Avoiding accusing you of badly written fiction, there are just several major problems with this:
1. Biological warfare facilities are never unsecured. Same with chemical warfare and nuclear facilities.
2. The Himalayas. Anything spread in that area of India just won't make it into China.
3. Air-borne microbes don't travel that way. If the contagion is an air-borne virus, you do not want to unleash it where there is nobody. You hit a major city such as New Delhi with it.
4. Viruses need hosts to spread. See 3.
5. Slow acting diseases usually don't kill people, because of the time given to the immune system to respond.
That's about it for now

Make sure most of the 600 million people, like around 90%, are hot babes.

Okay okay... I'll play along
2006:
The Virus spreads around and pretty much kills everyone.
The panicked nations of USA, Russia, China, etc disintegrate, and fragments of them nuke each other.
2007:
The ecosystem fails, because half the animal species are probably dead too. The climate zooms around in a weird way and makes agriculture impossible.
The nuclear winter begins.
2008.
The nuclear winter continues.
2009
The nuclear winter ends. But you wouldn't be around to see that, I'd imagine.

Well, Ranskaldan, at least it's better than *poo-poo* unlikely scenario *poo-poo* improbable outcomes *poo-poo* "badly written fiction" *poo-poo*...
(On that last note, Urban, I wasn't trying to write a novel, just quickly setting up a brief scenario that explains how it gets from start to finish, then asking for other poster's ideas about THE AFTERMATH not the scenario itself; not looking for nor expecting a Pulitzer for anything in this thread)

2006: virus kills 90% of earth's population.
2007: three spacecraft are launched from earth orbit. one flies towards alpha centauri, which splinters into 16 different factions. another flies to wolf359, where it forms an outpost colony, which also splits into two camps, eden and plymouth. the third spacecraft flies towards saturn, and discovers a black obelisk on iapetus.
2008: an alien species teleports massive quantities of black obelisks, dimensions in the ratio of 1:4:9, around jupiter, starting a reaction to warm europa up.
2009: the same alien species begins to invade earth with "angels", forcing the devastated populace of earth to build cities with names like tokyo-3 and gigantic robots to fight such abominations. it is during this time a fourth spacecraft, built by a corporation known as nergal, launches on a mission to defend the earth against these aliens, who bleed acid when killed.
2010: the year we make contact.
2020: a decade passes while humans manage to build their first warp capable ship, and make contact with various alien races.
2021: a sealab is built.
2022: a group of scientists decide to tunnel into the core of the earth and denoate a nuclear bomb to resurrect the planet, which had been dying as of late.
2023: they miscalculate, and the planet splinters into tiny little fragments, which are then impacted by meteors.
2024: the last humans die. good riddens.
