Yes, members of the US armed services are volunteers. But that doesn't mean it's ok to treat them like toy soldiers and put their lives at risk to fight a war of choice.

So, no one incapable of combat should be in the decision making process? Or mybe just those in the forces?
Great! War and peace decided by a bunch of young men high on testosterone.

How are you finding life as a human shield, Ann? If my hair was longer I could attractively style it in the hot air emanating from your good self. Ultimately we're just all a bunch of ****ers with opinions.

Perhaps you think that, but I don't. Either you didn't read what I posted, or you deliberately misinterpreted it.

I'm not a human shield, Laz. Frankly, I think those people are idiots.
Yes we all have opinions, and I voiced mine.

Fabulous. Incidentally I think homosexuality is a great and groovy thing too, though I have no intention of taking one up the shitter to prove it.

Funny thing about that incident. I heard that the brass wanted to avoid civilian injuries or deaths in scuffles between protesters and guards, so they issued the gate sentries blanks instead of live ammo. When that truck came in, there was nothing the gate sentries could do to stop it, and it was able to gather speed in the open area between the gate and the barracks.
I doubt we issue blanks anymore.
|
What you heard was bullshit. What was denied, by civilian political types in DC, who didn't want to be "provocative" was a request to emplace "dragon's teeth concrete barriers to force a vehicle to zig and zag at slow speed, along with the request to emplace a couple of .50 cal HMGs for perimeter security - that was denied since the range and penetrating power of the .50 is so high that civilian casualties would be unavoidable if the .50's were used. That would be a reasonable precaution with the dragon's teeth, but not without.
The gate sentries had live ammo, but the truck had a very short run, and was able to just floor it and get the driver out in front of the gate sentries, so they had no direct shot at him. The rooftop sentry was at too long a range and too poor an angle to direct effective fire at the driver of the truck, due to it's speed.

So do you advocate that others take one up the shitter to prove your point for you?
Ann has a valid point. Not so much with what we opine as a collective bunch of powerless morons on a website, but with the policy makers who are pushing this war, often disregarding professional military experts, and who have no prior history of meaningful service themselves. The only exception to that mold is Powell, who is the most moderate of the bunch.
The post-war assessment in the US, especially among much of the current pro-war bunch, is going to vary greatly with the time delay and body count.

A tad bit late, but dont think I'm bumping this thread.
I see Lazarus has found a lot of reasons for the US to invade Iraq. I say its an excuse, not a reason.
I could give you thousands of such pages from all over the world. There are many other countries that are even worse.
Saying this IS the reason to attack Iraq nonsense. In fact, there is a word for that and it starts with a H.

Whatever is included in what Hussein has done,
one thing I hope he's done is pack his bags.
In 48 hours, one way or another, he's on his way to being history.

Nothing.
and for the last 34 years that is.

Well, let's see. I said there were countries I considered to be worse too. I said it was subjective. I said there were other reasons.
Where was it that you stopped understanding?

Well, Laz. If you post 10+ pages of incriminating human rights violations I tend to get what you're aiming at.
If that is sooo subjective, why bother posting it. Unless that IS your point. Duh!

Lazarus has a valid point. If there isn't a rule against the stunt that Che pulled on ACS, there ought to be. Che's advancing his own view while making it appear as though the view is, in fact, Lazarus's. That's nothing short of fraud.

I see. So when I directly and deliberately wrote that I don't consider Iraq to be the worst regime in the world, and that there are other reasons for the war, I didn't actually mean it?
Can I hire you to explain all my posts to me?
