a way to give the AI a slap in the face
In my current game, I had a big opportunity to destroy Rome. I had just upgraded tons and tons of horsemen into knights. He was a huge country, but he still ha spearman and I had knights and nations that bordered him to the south on my side. So I took advantage and invaded him. He had really pissed me off the whole game, so I wanted to give him a slap in the face. I took his capital city and razed it. Rome, considered to be the greatest city in my world was now in ruins as my troops marched through its burning city square. I indulged in looking at Caesar on the negotiating table, begging for peace. OK, you can tell I've been playing civ3 too much recently. But don't you just love to do things like that to the AI?

I like more seeing his former population bowing to me and saying "Hail to the King! We love him!". Captured cities with WLTKD are just great to see.

I typically only raze cities late in the game. But, yeah, if some civ messes with me in the industrial (or modern) age, their capitol is usually TOAST (unless it has a working Wonder).

In my past two games I've built up sizeable empires to the middle ages, and then all of a sudden the allies on my borders just attack me for no reason, even though we'd been trading a lot and been pretty amiable. I don't start the fights, but I finish them, and I just love running over their cities and having them beg me to stop. But hey, they started it.

Being the peaceful man that I am, I try to avoid war at all costs. But sometimes, foreign powers will threaten world peace and security by actually BUILDING an army. This is, of course, unacceptable, and could upset the delicate balance of power - namely, my near domination of the world. It forces me to contain their aggression, lest they attempt to realize their global ambitions. Nothing like bringing a civilization to it's knees and forcing it to live in humiliation for 70 years.
Perhaps I need to take a break from Civ...

Forget nuking, razing his capital and all that. Build a ****-off lot of explorers and pillage every single square in his empire. Then laugh, like this ->

I fill every square in the radius of their bigger cities with high defense units (usually mech infantry), then i watch them starve.

I like your style johnmcleod
If his capital is big or it has wonders I'll refrain from razing it, after all, wiping out the civilization is not a slap in the face in itself? Better to make them realize their puny culture sucks and that they will be one of our own
In my recent game I wiped the Germans off the map with a horseman-to-knight upgrade , took about 30 cities, but Berlin was thriving so I did not raze it and actually built wonders in it later on.
Razing cities also hurts your reptutation BTW...

I have wanted the ability to give an uppity AI a "shot across the bow" since Civ I. Not declare war, but just lkie Reagan did in Libya in '86 - have the ability to *****-slap the AI as a way of saying "I'm getting really ticked at what you're doing, and by this action I am telling you to stop it right now."

How about sitting 30+ artillery (with infantry of course) on a mountain, in range of their biggest city, turn the battle animations off, and hit b then mouse, then b then mouse then b then..... you get the picture.
20 seconds, and that size 27 city, is now size 3 and utterly crippled. Helps stops revolts later on too. Sadly, sometimes this does take two turns.
Hmmmm ethnic cleansing. Great stuff (in Civ).

Reputation? What on earth is that? Right now I'm hooked on this one map where by 0 a.d., I've got control of about half the map under my rule and six dead rulers to bury. (heh heh heh)

20 seconds? Only in fast computers and users!
Also, with 30 artillery, you have to be pretty lucky to reduce a size 27 city to size 3; you have to "miss" soldiers, city improvements and even miscalculations (other misses). I think, however, that 2 turns may be enough, but in 3 I'm definitively sure that that's gonna be the end for the once prosperous city.

BTW, I noticed a strange thing in one of my recent games.
A goodie hut was on a tile on another civ's culture line. I popped the hut and barbs came flying out! 2 of them landed in enemy territory and went on to fight the AI, I think.

No, the raging furious constipated warriors may be a little sick, specially if they have to push it hard.
