CIV2 and Win2k
This is the damndest thing. Being bored with everything else I decided to go back to CIV 2. Im running win2k pro now and it installed fine, but now when I run it, i can play for about 5 mins and then get some manner of error occuring. Its not the indeo video thing, i already figured that one out and installed the latest from Intel. The game plays for about 5 mins, then it either freezes the machine, or just immediately goes into a hard boot, or I get the blue screen of death with any number of error messages associated with e.g. IRQL not equal or less, kmode not excepted or something like that, or whatever. I have tried this with CIV2 and Scenarios loaded, I have tried with just Civ2 loaded + 2.42 patch, i have tried with no 2.42 patch and nothing seems to help.
Anyone have a clue?

I am sorry to say that there is no known way to fix your problem. For some mysterious reason, Civ2 and Windows 2000 are not compatible. Sorry

Dunno about ToT, but FW and CiC don't seem to work either.

I've been able to play Civ2 MGE in Win2K with no problems whatsoever.
Edit: I never had to mess with any system settings, and I don't recall doing anything special with the Intel video files either. I did install the Win2K service pack 1, though.

I suspect this is related to the problems encountered in this thread. Civ2 is a 16 bit game rather loosely wrapped in a 32 bit shell - Win 2k being an NT variant is agressively 32 bit only. I suspect that very careful selection of the various 'properties' of the exe file may overcome the problem, but as I have no access to a Win 2k machine I can't help beyond this ...

UPDATE:
Well, knowing from others who play civ2 on win2k that is is possible, i started disableing things in an attempt to isolate the problem. Unfortunately, I disabled more than one thing at a time, however, i was able to get all the problems to go away. One of the last things I disabled prior to it running was L2 Cache... crap, I may as well be running a Celeron! I guess this would indicate a bad processor?

I also have the darndest time running Civ 2.42 on my Win2K machine. But I found that if I play without the CD, the game works fine.
I have not tried ToT on the Win2K machine yet.

This is one of these times I am happy that someone proved me wrong. There have been in the past messages at both the SLeague and Spanish forums asking for help re Civ2 vs W2k. The overall consensus was always that there was no remedy. As I said, I'm happy to learn that there may be a remedy.

Jay Bee,
have those that cant seem to get it to run installed a newer version of the Indeo Video from Intel? Gotta do that before it will work on win2k or you will take an Invalid Stack error every time.
