Subbing for People
In another thread... rah was telling a story how he was asked to sub for somebody that had to drop out of a game early.
He then pointed out that a few turns later, a massive strike force appeared and wiped him out.
Funny stuff
I've been asked to sub in a lot of games, and I used to do it all the time to help the people out. Nothing worse than having to play in a game with an AI because somebody had to leave...
But lately, I now don't do it. And while Rah's story is funny, it happens all the time.
Why do people make the effort to get a sub, knowing damn well that the player won't last very long.
I find that totally rude...
Yeah, in most cases when somebody drops, a sub usually gets a terrible civ. I used to have fun trying to drag these civs out of the depths of dispair... You know you don't have a chance, but the fun is in trying to make them competitve
However... I've sat their in "hold mode" (you know, the famous, other players are moving right now message you get when you hot join) and watch people continue to assult the civ you even haven't had a chance to touch yet.
In my opinion, when you DO THEM A FAVOR, and sub by taking a awful civ, they should at least give you the common courtesy to lay off you for a turn or two so you can figure out what the hell is going on... But, so many times this hasn't happned, and I've lost all interest in subbing...
What do others think?

If I'm at war with this civ allready I see no point in stopping the attack.
Doesnt really matter witch player plays the civ your destroying now does it
I would say ask first how the civ is doing before joining the game.

When I ask the question, the usual response is in terms of number of cities and relative position only.
I've never been told... and Oh, from the time you join and the time you will actually be able to move, you will lose three more cities
I'm not implying that you should be totally left alone just because you have taken a bad position. I'm suggesting just a couple of turns to be allowed to figure out the game situation. Otherwise... why even bother asking the person. Remember, they are doing you the favor...

i've not inherited such a horrid position as rah described, and i didn't mind subbing so long as the original player didn't mind his civ being mediocrely led

Seems to be a matter of knowing the players you're subbing with.

That's exactly right. I got Prom to take over a very under privileged civ last week. He knew the score and made a go of it...
Some fun was had I believe...

So, when you guys sub, you have no problem with being seriously attacked on the first turn you take over?

That's the problem... usually you don't know... the messages for you to join the game don't really include, "you are toast"... Most of the times, it's " not a good position"
So I guess nobody wants a few safe turns to at least understand the game... I guess I'm asking for too much considering I'm usually doing people a favor by taking over a bad civ

i have problem with that. normally i like to take over if im in an alliance or alone. the thing with running over is wasted time.
if i ask for a sub nomally i guess im the best or the 2nd. i never ask for a sub if im the last. das läßt mein Stolz nicht zu.

Haha, I think underprivileged civ is an understatement, Personally I don’t mind taking a fixer upper even if they are under attack, (I am a sucker for hopeless cases). I held out against Trev barley but by the rules of that game, as Berzerker said, it would have been cruel to allow anyone to take that civ. No capitol, no Masonry no tech trading or stealing, I would have been hopelessly last even if I did get Masonry from someone.
I don’t mind taking hopeless cases as long as there is a way for me to rebound.

Sorry about that Prom but because I'm not involved in the action I didn't fully realise until you confirmed it
Thanks!
