Verto :
Isn't there the risk this thread transforms to a pissing contest between flag wavers and flag burners ?

I thought flag burners had the monopoly of pictures, and got criticized by pretty everyone... I believe an ad-nauseum flag-waving here might provoke someone into even more flag-burning just so that you know who pisses further

Yes this is true but what the fabric represents to some people like the men in my family......well it might just be fabric to you but to them it was the symbol of all they hold and held dear and the reason they fought for their country, family and honor. It might seem silly to you but to them and to many more it's more then just fabric.
Joseph is right.........you weren't there you don't know what happened. Even I who sat and listened for hours upon his return home to the stories and attrocities these men endured...even I can't comprehend what they went through. But I can tell you this, through out everything, every story he told the one underlying theme was that he spoke of his belife in his country...that they would one day resuce them ( and we did)and how good it was to be free. That's something that until you have it taken away we tend to take for granted.
And thanks obi~ your right. I shouldn't be sorry for expressing my opinions. It might have come across patriotic and if I did then call me patriotic. I'm proud of my family and my country and I will make no apologies for that.

Most of the American protesters burning flags are ignorant/naive and spoiled youth who are just trying to be 'cool' by imitating the Hippies of days long past (hence the shouting of archaic slogans, the donning of tie-dye, blaring of 60s music, and etc ad nausium). Most of the people who oppose the war for educated reasons spend there time at there jobs or with their families or peacefully demonstrating or doiong somethn else other than flag burning (ie, they have somethn better to do). These are the people who I can respect, even if their views are opposite mine. I dont let the moronic actions of the flag burners bother me a bit. Now if someone who I respected for their antiwar views (like spiffor ) were to burn a flag.... ....i dunno what would happen. Id probbaly get upset then.
My point is, Tia, try not to let it bother you. I know how you feel, coming from a military family (and i myself may soon be in the military) myself.

I'd like to use it as my avatar for a few weeks, just for irony's sake...

You guys actually get offended when you see somebody lighting up your flag?
I couldn't care less, personally.
I'm proud of a lot of things my country has done, and I'm proud for a lot of the values it represents, but I couldn't give a damn if somebody decided it was necessary to light the maple leaf up...

Is it illegal?
Maybe I'll burn it myself to get the photo.

Why do people get angry over burning the flag? Because it is a symbol for the American people. It isn't simply a piece of cloth, it saying 'I f***ing hate America' (whether the people or the government). People don't like that around these parts.
Oh, and thanks for the new avatar, guys .

Imran: it's sorta sad that a symbol gets you so riled up. Someone hates your country? Deal with it.
If all they're doing is burning flags, be thankful. They could be flying planes into buildings...

Yeah, i bet if those kids (heh, i feel so old.... even tho im probably their age. physical age at least... ) went and lived in most other countries (like most of Africa, Asia, and South America and even some Euro countries) for a while, they would come back to the US with a little more respect for the country and gratitude for their relative freedom and rights to life liberty, and persuit of happyness. They may still very well have antiwar views, sure, but they wouldnt be so spoiled and ignorant as to make an all-encompasing diss towards the US such as flag-burning.
