This Is Just Silly
So, I saw some news clip the other day of a mother explaining to her daughter that daddy was in Iraq "defending the Constitution."
Now come on. Defending the Constitution? Oh, this must be sorta like the people who claim that WW1, for example, or Korea, were about defending the United States. Do people seriously believe this, or are they just too hyped up on nationalism/patriotism to think?
And no, this thread isn't about bashing the current war. No, naturally I don't support it, but what I'm *****ing about here is the fact that people use patriotic slogans that have no bearing in truth and absolutely no accuracy. And even worse, they're teaching this stuff to children.

A little of both.
If you where to believe everything that the US officials say, you'd think that Bush was the second coming of christ or something. Alot of people never doubt what an authority figure says, especially with so much jingoism in the air.

Maybe, but it basically perpetuates a bunch of lies, and encourages further such action in the future.

However, you do have to realize that a mother isnt about to tell her child "Daddy is going to fight a regieme and might die or be tortured so that the president can get his oil." Especially on TV...
Though I do believe she believes daddy is going to fight a good war. So what? At least it gives her comfort....

I understand that, but the problem is that the mother seemed to actually believe this ****. And this still doesn't address the issue of people actually believing that wars such as Vietnam, Korea, etc., were about defending our freedom or our country.

DV,
Nice poster. Of course, just because war might get rid of certain problems doesn't mean that war is the moral solution. Remember, an immoral solution is immoral, no matter what the problem is.

Not Kuwait. Saudi Arabia. Or at least that's what I thought. It's De Facto though, the government doesn't officially support it or anything. It just looks the other way.

Ah, truth be told slavery is still practised everywhere. Places like that, it's just not as underground.

Iraq also practices slavery. It's called the draft/conscription. If I'm not mistaken, Germany does it too, as do many other nations.

DV cute poster.. iot has just one problem:
If i remember correctly, in the cases sited, the "evil" side was the aggressor, not the other way around. (I do not want to get involved in a CW debate, nor will I)
Now, since so many here feel in a pre-emptive mood, let me pre-empt the whole "appeasement" silliness by saying the following:
The Horrors that make the Nazi regime unique begun only after the war begun, and only in those areas under Nazi control (obviously) and that territory expanded solely based on GERMAN VICTORIES. Had war begun in 1938, and the Germans had done as well as they did, the Holocaust would have still happened even without any Munich to point at(and had the allies taken the offensive in 1939 and Germany defated by 1940, it would not have happened even after Munich) So, the only way in which Munich and what went on there can be blamed for the Holocaust is if you can argue that only because of appeasement did the Germans gain victory in 1939-41 over the armies of their enemies and gain the allies they gained.
Oh, and something extra for the Francophobes: you guys keep saying that the French are cowards and never fight: obviosuly then, it does not matter when the war in europe begun, since it is a given to expect French defeat, NO? and thus, even without appeasement the Germans would have taken over most of Europe until the US and USSR joined the war to defeat them (if that happened at all), or is this not an obvious conclusion to draw form the "French are cowards" line fo thinking so prevelant among some circles here?

Yes, it is something you have to do against your will, if you desert (=flee) you get shot (when waging war anyway)
you have no rights, you may only obay
Also you have to do the dirty jobs, so basicly you are the cannon fodder, you are usually quite expendable (a war always involves a few losses, just like every now and then a slave, in certain circumstances anyway, succumbs to the work he has to do)
Happy now?
