What level do you play on?
At the moment after a year of playing Civ III on and off (i.e. a couple of weeks, on a couple of months off) I've managed to beat Monarch handily.
I've started a couple of games on Emperor but I find it hard going and get behind very quickly.
I can't play at any level below Monarch because it becomes too easy to win (I play a slow expansion strategy with high culture and as much trade and money as I can get).
I always play on a regular sized world with the maximum number of civs. Is this why I can't get anywhere on Emperor?
Anyway, what level do you usually play on?

I usually play Monarch and Emperor games.
Emperor games for more challenge, and Monrach games for more "calm", builder type, gameplay.

Emperor is a challenge, if you want to play this game seriously.
But I like to 'play' around with AI factions

I like regent-level. Sometime by now I'll start Monarch, but I'd like to feel a little more prepared. I'm still absorbing some tactics and routes.

deity at the moment, i just skipped emperor. i have won a few games on deity, but it's not really that much fun being beaten up all the time, somehow. i think i will go down to emperor or monarchy again.

Try Regent. It starts to annoy you when AI cheats, all the time, and you have to actually _fight_ [not literally] ( ) to win the game.

Emperor. I've got stock games pretty much under control, and only have a problem when Killer AIs emerge, mostly when using the AU Mod.

Give a good read in the strategy forum (especially AU games) and applying this to your game means you can beat up to monarch fairly easily. Try things of your own, and you'll manage to beat emperor often...

I hardly ever play SP games anymore(pbem are IMO much more fun), but when I did, I alternated between emperor and deity.

I might play at any level from Chieftain to Emperor but usually Regent. I rarely finish a game though.
If I play at Deity (which is rare) I make sure I have a dream starting location on a tiny map via the editor (I don't mind if you call that a cheat).

Umm, monarch mostly. I've won a couple on emperor, and I sometimes drop to regent for particluar games. Emperor becomes too stressful most often.

I started at chieftain and played my way up to monarch(and stayed there for a while). Monarch is a bit too easy now so I just started my first game at emperor, it's a bit early to tell how I'm doing though.

I always play regent or higher. Regant for a fair game vs the AI or higher if I want to have a challenge.

emperor
Since I've gotten the game (immediately after release in Belgium) I've almost immediately started playing emperor. Sure I had to restart/quit many games during that early learning stage, but since long, emperor is not a REAL challenge anymore.
It's rather challenging sometimes though, especially when your starting location s*cks. Usually I consider this game as a fun level (most players think Monarch is): you can be as well a builder as a warmongerer. Tech lead is also very possible and very likely during last eras. The only thing I consider as too difficult at this level is building your wonders yourself.
I've played and beaten deity only a couple of times, but due to the big advanteges for the AI civs, due to the fact that you're almost sure to run one era behind in tech and overall development, this level has lost its 'reality factor' too much. Normally you just have to stick out, and prepare to gain strenght during last eras.
As human I outwits AI, you're posed to gain world control in modern era (that is, if you were lucky before and weren't mass attacked too early).
Short summary: emperor rules !!! (monarch just a bit too easy IMHO).

IMHO diety is cheap and gets me angry. I just cant take the fact that my tanks get killed by Pikeman....when it happens 2 or 3 times in a game, I agree, the're upsets, but 15 times it's just cheap.

I played Regent only once.
Looked easy to me.
So I play Monarch if you don't wanna lose game (but still have some fun).
And Emperor if I want some challenge.
(it's mostly OK for me, but some badly misplaced MPP and alliances could destroy you)
P.S.
And Deity is only if I like to play all-against one game.

If you are facing Diety AI's using MA's and facing primarily pikes then you don't have a whole lot to complain about even with 15 unluckey RNG's (sometimes it can get real rough though)
As for me I play at regent, for a low stress game then warlord. Chieftain is too easy (warlord is getting that way as well) and I hate it when the AI cheats so I won't play higher than Regent.

For deity What if you went pacifist in beginning and work your way to democracy. Researched and expanded hardcore all the way to modern Armor. Then change gov back to monarchy and kick their butt

Or what if you click quit in the beginning of such game and save yourself time. I used to play civ2 like that, expand, research + howitzers = game over. Also works wonders on Monarch in civ 3, can be done in Emperor too, but on Deity you have to influence and slow down the AI (kill and conquer them) or you will lose. On deity they start with 2 cities, and they expand 2x fast as you, if you are good that is.
