AC is driving and OJ has the gun to his head so that only leaves the back seat.

Yeah, the marines will have a battery of 155's.
Air strikes are more precise and less likely to cause collateral casualties.
The range depends on both the gun, and the type of surface it has to operate from. Range can go up to about 24-25 miles. One big difference is that the explosive payload of a 155 shell is around 45 lbs or so (the whole shell is about 70), so it takes a few, especially in a building, to make sure you get people out.
Large bombs have more of an effect than an equivalent amount of 155's coming in over time.

At least 15 kilometers. How far beyond that do you think the average ground pounders venture?
How well does artillery take out a target? Ask the poor sods on the Somme, or Verdun, or... consider that artillery killed more than any other arm in all wars of the modern era.

Far more shells for the artty than bombs for the fly boys though.
And btw, I think that most victims of shelling would dispute you.
Airplanes go quickly. The shells never stop if you are in the way.

Assuming you are not in a mile deep bunker.
If you are on, or near, the surface, shelling is the most lethal form of warfare ever devised.

and there are no civilians around. so there is no reason not to shell.
save the expensive laser and gps guided bombs for populated areas. Use artillery in unpopulated areas such as this.

well you don't aim the artillery at your own troops
I'm not sure how far back the artillery is. But just move the artillery up to the front and you don't have to worry about hitting your own guys.

Bofors AT4 is a Swedish disposable tank buster rocket. Practical range is a perhaps 300 meters.
US has about 600 000 of them.

If this keeps up, maybe us folks at home can start instant messaging and e-mailing tactical battle tips to our good men and women on the front lines.
I'm sure they'd just love having that kind of contact with the civvies back home.

The Iraqi Vice President is saying the west is preventing the media from reporting what is really happening!!
After what we've all seen tonight, that is such BS, it is stunning!

AFAIK, most Marine arty is towed, and so it takes longer to set up than Army arty does. I would expect that until they secure Umm Qasr, that at least that battery would be positioned where it could reach any strong points within the port. The main body of Marines probably isn't that far ahead - they want to keep cohesion, so they will be securing the overall area, rather than stringing out.
