He - who shall remain nameless - would, of course, have immediately bagged the AI for being so backward as to have an archer in the mid-20th century.

Names! I need names!
Anyway, I've noticed that AI capitals are invulnerable to barbarian armies in the Mac version of Civ II. I've tested it multiple times; more than once, I've stacked a dozen howitzers and dozens of armor divisions around the AI capital and each and every unit failed to destroy the capital's defenders (these were usually pikemen or gunpowder units). But they kicked butt on nearby, non-capital, AI cities.

I remember a GOTM last year where the Barbs took out the Egyptian civ - we were playing Fundy start, but I do not think another civ took out the capital, but that is a possibility. I will see if I stilll have saves of that game to look back on.

Yes, check closely. I think for it to work the city has to have at least one defender. (which would explain how a civ could get wiped out early by barbs)

It would be so like the AI to have capital cities invulnerable to barbs provided there is one defender inside... but when barbs come calling, using that one defender to attack the barbs and lose, leaving the city undefended
