I agree with you XarXo... The last game I was truly addicted to was Icewind Dale II (2001??)... nothing newer than that has piqued my interest in the same way...
Only Heroes of Might and Magic III (2001), ID2, Civ II (1996), Baldurs Gate (1997)? can actually immerse me any more.
All that designers can do nowadays seems to be to add graphics and flash. Well, frankly I prefer topdown 2d and actually enjoy the statistical text games (but not adventure-text games- by gawd those were awful) but I enjoy(ed) baseball mogul (1999), and some of the old financial trading freeware games... as well as commander keen, duke nukem, etc.
I suppose we've seen everything... all the innovations that can be done... and we just aren't dazzled by graphics. I guess that's our problem XarXo...

24 bananas at the latest count.
I was just talking to a co-worker at my company who is very close to retirement. I asked him what he would be doing with his time once he gets the Monday through Friday back.
He told me that he's been playing XBOX online for a year now and loves it!!! In fact, he has several buddies around the same age that like playing the XBOX also.
I mentioned this little game "civ" that he might be interested in...

I will mention Halo2 -- he'll have plenty of time to get deep into that
I forgot to mention that the complaint about those handheld devices really excerbating his arthritis. Probably not a complaint that the console makers field on a regular basis.

Actually, I enjoy Xbox games and MarioKart more than most recent computer games. Maybe, as was discussed in a similar thread on this, by DrSpike and me, I have changed- but I still doubt that since I can still put in a few good hours of HOMM or Civ.

The fun thing is that this has happened earlier too, if you look at the dates, you'll see that Shogun did the same thing a loooong time ago...!

Yup, thread necromancy seems to be all the rage right now
The original post has not quite lost its touch, however... There are few games that really get me addicted, and even less so recent ones. But then again, there are some (even if it is a wild mix of genres):
Civ3, that game really built up my Civ addiction to insane levels.
Morrowind, such depth in a game is just insane. I am still playing it today with my third character and still discovering new things (!) ...see The Elder Scrolls
Oblivion, can't wait for that one to hit the stores (right after Civ4 on my list) - the follow-up to Morrowind which promises to be grand from what I read in the forums. ...see The Elder Scrolls
Galactic Civilizations, hours and hours of fun and trying to make a score in the Metaverse. Liked the Excaliburs a lot, and eagerly awaiting GalCiv 2. ...see Galactic Civilizations 2
Etherlords, now you tell me about addiction and I'll show you the Ether Planes, my fansite for El1 and El2...
...well finally that's more than I first thought

You've never seen Ski Resort Tycoon? I have. I bought it for $1.99 out of the bargin bin. Indeed, I believe they are making SRT 3 at the moment.
Then there's the Snow Board Tycoon, which is also another Ski Resort Tycoon game.
I've seen a couple of others, but I don't recall the title.
You'll have to try harder if you want to think of a game that hasn't been done. Especially if its a "Tycoon" kind of game.

Got it. Big Business Tycoon Deluxe Gold Plus (AIR). It's a translated title from Japan.
I'll buy just about any game if it's priced right. I never know when I'll find another Uplink or X2...
Oh yea... Sim Ant wasn't a bad idea. But its game play could have been done a bit better. There is a market for an Ant Colony sim. Indeed, there's been several published over the years.

Humm... Civ3, well, it frankly wasn't that good. Civ2, especially ToT, is better, IMO.
Civ style gaming isn't going to change significantly though. City spam, work the tiles, and wipe out your opponents using superior units. There are some advances in the game play that could help, but overall, it's going to stay the same. In 100 years, Civ will still be on the market (probably Civ30 or so). And people will still be whining that it wasn't as fun as their beloved Civ28 (which was the first Civ they ever played).
The first game of that type you play tends to be your favorite of the kind. Once you get over that fact, you can accept the fun that the sequels and the clones give you. But that first game is like your first love... that isn't going to happen again. Not in that genre. But, you can find something nice, sweet, and fun to keep you company. You just have to look around, and be willing to get to know a game instead of always turning up your nose at what is available.

On a more serious note: I fully look forward to a renewal of the addiction with Civ4.

Especially the second one. After what? Ten years? It's still "Move your units ahead one space. Place workers on tiles."

i agreed with the original poster and still do. at least smac changed things up a bit. the next editions could have started really doing things better, but nope...
i remain skeptical of cIV.
