Is the plane still around today? Or did it get destroyed in the blast? I assume it's still around because those planes could fly pretty high.
|
It's in the Smithsonian now, IIRC.

Is it? I honestly don't remember seeing it, unless it was in some section I missed.

I know it was there a couple years ago, as I saw it on display. They've probably moved it out since then, however, as I don't believe it was a permanent exhibit. It's probably in some warehouse with the Ark of the Covenenant...

The test flight crashes were handled by an expert pilot, actually the same guy in both cases. He survived both times.

The Smithsonian has a seperate air and space museum, which may be why you missed the Enola Gay if you visited the general collection.

As I understand it, all modern fighters are inherently unstable. It's the only way to get high manueverability at the required speeds.

Nice to see the XF-85 putting in an appearance. Surely the stupidest looking plane ever after the Caproni Ca-90. The Vulcan is a nice plane - I had a look inside one of the remaining ones about 20 years ago.
Anyway, here's another fave from the 50s: The F 100 Super Sabre.

And here's the fighter version of the XB 70: the XF 108 Rapier - another great aircraft of the 50s along with the Avro Arrow and the F 104.

They have it in the warehouse out back. The warehouse is some miles away. They have a lot of planes in the warehouse but don't display them.

Yeah the Rafaele is a real looker.
I got so enthused by this thread that I've reinstalled Falcon 4.0 on my computer, dug out my huge and heavy Flightstick, and spent the last few hours trying to remember how all the instruments work.
At least I can still land the damn thing.

The nicest looking plane would have to be either the Supermarine Spitfire, tho the P-51 Mustang isnt too far behind. The F-22 Raptor would be up there behind those... that is just one cool looking plane.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II has a bad rap for being ugly... but i dont think so! Am i the only one who thinks the good 'ol Warthog looks tough? I guess I just have respect for its insane durability (it can fly with one of its engines blown off and massive holes in the wings) and armament.
*salivates at the power of the 30 mm vulcan cannon...*
