You did no such thing. You provided an anecdote about how, in the company of your group, a Jewish friend of yours tolerates the use of "jewed" as a synonym for "cheated." That doesn't prove anything.

We're talking about non-members of a particular group going around casually using that group's name as a synonym for something stupid/bad, in public settings. I doubt you'd dare use the "jewed" phrase in any such setting, would you? Do you think a teacher would be wrong to chastise a kid for using it? Does the group, who by and large do not condone the label's use as such, have no right to be offended by it? These are the questions you sidestepped, and then pretended your meaningless anecdote somehow covered your arse.

As I said a while ago, when I hear someone casually tossing around "that's so gay," "how queer is that," etc., the ol' defense mechanism kicks in. Considering the number of ******* bigots out there, it is a natural and, IMO, suitable reaction. It creates an instant atmosphere of mistrust, anxiety and separation. Now imagine how a closeted school kid would feel those emotions, and then you might just maybe understand what the problem is.

They aren't using gay as an insult, just as a way of describing something they don't find particularly appealing.

Well I think everything depends.

If someone would refer to someone stingy and said "don't be such a jew" i would think about whether he's joking or not.

I would definitly like this to be used less.

However, in regards to this case - I'm not sure the 12 y/o is fully aware of what he's doing. If I was a young kid in an enviroment where "gay" would be considered "bad", I would use "gay" just as i would use "dork" "A$$hole" etc.

What this kid needs is a good ol' explaining. Not suspension.

i agree completely! i think he'd learn alot more if the school took it serious enough to let him know it was wrong, but not so serious that he thinks he's being unfairly targeted, his parents obviously think the suspension is unjust, so they aren't going to back up the schools assertions that he is a homophobic bully, and in the end i don't think this kid is going to learn any tolerance from this policy. I mean really how can a zero tolerance policy on "intolerant" kids really foster tolerance? The school needs to change their policies!

Especially since they'll spend all their time stamping out any piece of language they find remotely offensive or has the slightest possibility of leading to discrimination. Ah.. the despicable thought police who attempt to remake the world to suit themselves, they shall surely lead miserable lives.

There's an easy cure to the problem of gay kids being harassed in HS. You simply find the chief tormentor and smash his face in. I've seen it work myself.

Apparently you're forgetting your own statements, since as you yourself said--some people use it as a gay slur. Now, if I'm out and about and hear someone I don't know or just met shout out, "that's so gay!" I have no way of telling how he means it, do I? What "context" is going to make me know this is the guy who just uses it unthinkingly, or the one who uses it maliciously?

I can remember when I was in college and went to visit a friend on another campus. We went into her dorm's common room to watch some TV, and a couple of jock-looking guys were in there watching football. Something happened they didn't approve of, and out came the expletives: "Goddamn it, that stupid fag!" "****, that was so gay," etc. Why is it people feel the need to use homosexual terminology for expressing how bad something is? Think about it...the worst insults you make to people are calling them fag, queer, ********er, pansy, fairy, etc. You want to call something bad, you call it queer or gay. It's all variations on a theme: It's a bad thing to be gay, so calling something gay is the best way of expressing that something is bad. Considering the plethora of such phrases out there, the argument that it isn't related to homosexuality is just plain bullshit, and the rational people can see that.

I'm not going to be unhappy, I'm just not going to put up with people around me using gay as a negative statement. I don't feel any compunction to tolerate the further association of homosexuality with what is bad, nor to coddle unthinking morons who don't comprehend the impact of the words they're saying.

So what? Virulent homophobes use everything as a gay slur; that doesn't mean that the socially accepted meaning of the word is derogatory. If a majority of people use the word in a non-derogatory manner, then it isn't a slur. A minority of idiots (on both sides) are not enough to change the meaning of "gay"...
