Trading Maps
I've noted in the succession and demo games that an awful lot of map trading goes on, and for good reason.
This is a MGE question...

In my experience, I have never gotten a map trade unless the AI civ was worshipful.

Is this just the way it is, or is there something I'm missing?

If they are an ally, Enthusiastic is enough.

In 2.42, you don't always need Worshipful to trade maps with the AI, even without an alliance.

I've done a LOT of map trading, and can testify that it can be done at Cordial as well (I use 2.4.2) in some cases. I am usually using Marco Polo for early contact, and I tech gift to improve attitudes, always gifting the first of the two tech options (it is the one more desired by the AI). I also maintain a Spotless rep and try to avoid getting asked the question about declaring war or breaking alliance with their "enemy" (who sometimes is not even listed on the Intel screen as having been contacted!).

One other thing to look out for in early contacts is that both civs have to have the MapMaking tech; when the other does not have it they will say something like "we do not need your filthy maps", but if you then gift it to them they are glad to trade (just the tech gift should elevate even the Mongols one attitude level!).

I forgot to add that I think having an embassy makes a difference, too, which allows map trading at levels as low as cordial.

Ah, that could make a difference. I'll try doing without my "crutch" in the next one...

Pretty sure I've tried to trade maps well after the tech is available to all, with embassies in place -- but I still don't ever remember success without "worshipful" attitude. Wonder if this is a 2.42 vs MGE thing...

Regardless, this gives me some good landmarks to keep in mind. Thx all.

In our experience the stupid AI will always trade maps with a spotless correspondent - you just need to make them receptive by gifting and then the wammy - we have done this in the end game to find their last hidden city in order to destroy it. Long live a Spotless rep!!

I tend to gift them up to Worshipful with tech gifts (sometimes swaps will work as well), make sure they have Mapmaking (and that I do... forgot that once ) and trade away.

One game, I had to give about a dozen techs to the Celts - who had one city left which I couldn't find (founded after Apollo!). They were good enough to send the map to Bomber Command I doubt I was spotless there, but it worked

In the present early landing game, I carefully gifted techs to get the Babs up to worshipful and then they agreed to exchange maps. Very useful they were a restarted civ that did not yet have a single city
