Macromanageing the Micromanagement. Micro. Macro. Mmmmmm....
Hey all,
SMACX has me just as addicted as SMAC did ever so long ago, but I've run against something that has chaffed me.
Specifically, the base micro is getting just to much for me to handle, but I fear the governers since my experience with AI base management has been "it sucks"
Is there a way I can manually build a "giverner", or edit the queue the AI governers use so that I can ensure that a base will build "Recycling Tanks" then "Recreation Commons" then ... etc.
I don't mind handling the military parts, as I can inturrupt the queues to build whatever I feel, but I would really like to automate the base facility construction as I almost religiously follow a preset pattern with every base.
Any help?
And does anyone know if I can do this is Civ3 as well? (as an aside)
Thanks,
Chris Woods

i'm not sure how to solve your SMAC problem, but the solution to any problems you have in civ3 can be solved by following these easy steps:

Close civ3
uninstall it
remove your CD from your computer, and crack it into many small pieces
burn the CD shards
call an exorcist
good luck

Well. you can uncheck many of the things a Governor can do, leaving it to just manage drones and build facilities - then you can add facilities to the build queue which in my experience the governor follows (experience gained from setting up AI scenarios - I shouldn't think it'd be any different with the AOI in SP games)
You can set one base as a template for all bases, or can set specialist bases (just air forces, for example)
Of course, at any time, you can oiverrule the Governor

Do you use the queue templates, which let you save a list of items to build? You can right click under the "Queue" button to access the menu.
Edit: I mean right click, not left, I think.

Static Universe is right on with another example of why SMAC(X) is the greatest TBS game ever designed.

The funny part is whenever I play I always forget this feature even exists and rarely use it myself.
It's still excellent, though.

all those times when i've had 80 bases and i've spent 10minutes stacking a queue of 8 for every single base so i can have a few turns of doing nothing

Unfortunately many great features of SMAC(X) were never well documented, if at all, and had to be learned from experimentation or reading these threads. Thank-you, to all the dedicated players who have posted these features over the years.

Okay, that RULES.
I'll be damned, I never knew about the ability to save/load build queues, makes me want to go home right now and fire up a new game, just so's I can record some useful builds.

It can be really helpful but you can fall into the trap of using the same queue for all your bases and that is not optimum. For example, does the base in the centre of your empire really need a high armour defender??
Use the saved queue as a timesaver but give a thought to where to deviate from it.

This is true, which is why in single player games i have different que files titled "coastal", "sea", "frontier", and "captured".
I stopped using ques in multiplayer because it gives your opponents WAY too much information!
