The poles you're referring to are the game's way of delinating the map, nothing more. I imagine the programmers chose arctic/glacial terrain for this delination because, frankly, you can't do hardly anything with that sort of land. I suppose they could have used two black strips ...

You can remove poles by making the map flat.

I was under the impression that the map *borders* (i.e. north/south) remain intact, whether the world is round or flat. Isn't that what he's talking about?
