Use eMule instead, it makes it much easier and faster.
There's also websites that distribute serverlists if you're having problems connecting. eMule auto-updates these once it finds a server to connect to.
Never set upload below 10KB/s if you care about your download speed.

eMule is a good client. If you want to experiment, you can go try overnet as well.

The new eDonkey is a hybrid of the old eDonkey with Overnet.

Oh, OK. I haven't used overnet for a couple of months. .32 was my last. Maybe I ought to give it another try.

Is eDonkey2000 different from eDonkey? Which is better?

eDonkey2000 is eDonkey.
eMule is an opensource unofficial client that most people use now because it's substantially less buggy.

Thanks. This p2p business gets a bit confusing with all these various clients.

Okay, now I have eMule 0.27c installed and now I am connected to a server called "Silent-Bob," randomly chosen from a list. Now how do I download a file? There's no directory list or anything like it.

Click on the "search" icon at the top. Type in your keyword(s). Click on "search". Douple click on the file you want to download (best to choose one with a reasonable amount of sources)

Yo, I used emule but it seems like the search results are alot less than they were in edonkey.
1) Any ideas on how to get more results?
2) How do I know if I'm connected to the Overnet on edonkey or not?

Hit "search" button and type in what you want.
Things to keep in mind with the eDonkey/eMule network:
1) It doesn't matter what server you're on, as long as you're on a server (then you're on the entire network)
2) eDonkey is not an "instant gratification" client a la Kazaa, it is geared towards long-term large-file downloads and is mostly used for such
3) eDonkey clients transfer in 9MB chunks, and everyone shares what they're downloading. Once you're done downloading a 9MB chunk, you're automatically sharing this to other people trying to download that file as well, so files distribute rapidly and download speeds are also high. Never set your max upload speed below 10KB/s, or your download speed will be castrated.
4) eDonkey clients make extensive use of queues. It sometimes takes a while before a download even begins, or moves in substantial speeds.
5) Yes, the colors mean things in the "progress" indictator in the transfer lists. In eMule, black/dark grey means that segment has been downloaded, red means its not available, and the more blue something is, the more sources of it are available.
6) Look into eMule's kickass webserver functionality in the preferences. You can specify a port and it hosts its own webserver, and you can log into this website and basically do everything remotely (manage transfers, connect to different servers, download new files, etc) through a web browser.

1) You might be on a crap server. Also, wait a while. It sometimes takes longer for the bulk of results to show up.
2) I can't remember exactly, but the button that leads you to online help (beside the one you click to connect to edonkey servers) also has something about your connection to overnet status on it. Run your mouse over it and see what happens.

1) eMule is more intelligent than eDonkey2000 in how it groups together similar files, and the search feature turns up less raw numbers in terms of sources available than what's truly available. Once you start downloading it, the sources number increases dramatically.
2) eMule doesn't use Overnet. In eDonkey2000 0.46/0.47, the icon second from the left at the very top is the Overnet icon.

eDonkey2000 0.47 came out the other day, it's a massive bugfix release.
From their site:
Quote:
|
New version (0.47)
4.03.03 - So much has been fixed it was amazing it worked at all before. Fixes bugs causing corruption. And uses far less connections. Warning, you will have to update your skin if you are not using the standard one.

Would you recommend someone who has eDonkey already working fine to convert to emule?
Is it worth the effort?

I tried the eDonkey client once, and I didn't find it radically different from eMule. Except that it was buggy, had ads and was a general pain in the arse. Figuring out the interface sholdn't be difficult.
