Sudden Strike 2 (but get the Total Victory add-on too) simply because the scenario editor is superb.

I am not really a wargame fan but Combat Mission 1 and 2 are both excellent games.

What genre? You like Sci-Fi or realistic?
Anyway (my pics)
PTO-naval...console...PS2
Battlefield 1942....FPS....PC
Counterstrike....FPS...PC (okay, so it's more terrorist/counterterrorist)

Close Combat III and V are worth a look if you like real time action without the cartoonish nature of the Sudden Strike games. There are huge amounts of user mods and expansions for CC III too.

Medieval Total War is a fantastic game with great battles on a fantastic scale. I've put almost as much time into it as I did with Civ.
