I've never seen a barb city produce a boat of any kind.

I thought the Barbs built the kind of unit with which they took the city?
And as they can't take them with a boat...

somewhere on this site i am sure it states that once the human player has developed a certain tech, it changes what barbs show up with...? i assumed it was the same for what they build out of captured cities...
can anyone add to this ?
btw, NOTCH 9th

Cute.
It does list what type will show up based on tech, but doesn't make the connection with what they build. One can assume that, but it's not stated.

I thought I've seen one captured by chariot but produced archers. But it's been awhile since I've had the barbs take one of my cities.
But I do have a game saved from last weekend where the barbs took one of civfan's cities with a chariot. I can look to see what it's producing.

I had an OCC game where the barbs captured a large city from a distant AI. I sent a boat with 2 dips and bribed units for centuries to come. I don't remember mounted units issuing forth.

The game I was talking about was at Mings, so I can't check the save. darn. I'll have to test it in another game.

It's funny, I let my default library fill, then move them to a civback library. (like we've ever played any of those games again) I had over 500 games saved there going back quite a few years. I guess it's time to delete a few.

When I checked the capital defense bonus against barbarians I had lots of examples: the captured cities allways produced the kind of unit capturing it, archers, chariots, legions or dragoons, even when the techs were not yet available in the game.

Ok, that's two people that have examples. One more and I'll be convinced.

It would be nice to have "proof" of this... Would be helpful in setting up non unit factories

And to make sure that even if it's that way in SP, it's the same in MP.

It would be nice to know whether it is an Urban Legend or not. From the sound of things... it sounds true.

War4ever, Ming,
I should have added that this was cheat mode testing, only. On the other hand I donīt see why it shouldnīt apply in SP or MP games. Some Early Landing Games should soon give more examples as the cities are poorly defended. In fact I am waiting for that to get some nice trade routes for my SSC.

Barbs never seem to do what we want them to...
I would question whether we are confusing two possibilities: that the Barbs produce the most recent warrior unit (which is what they just happen to have captured it with, because their outbreaks upgrade with tech discoveries), or they produce what it was last making when captured (who would be producing something older anyway?). Setting up test games for this will be very difficult, as mentioned above. If anyone has saved games just before a Barb city capture it could help propagate the testing...
A new thread would help too, as this topic has gotten away from GW vs STWA...

I don't think there are any differences, I was speaking more about differences like the surprise bonus that occurs only against Human players so it appears different from SP.

The city produces what the enemy had set.
If they had gunpowder and you don't, ...still builds; assuming they were building.
