Danger! Danger! USAPATRIOT Act to be extended
The provisions of the USAPATRIOT Act have sunset provisions and are set to go away in 2005. Congress is now talking about removing the sunset provisions and make it permanent.

Orrin Hatch is pushing it from the Senate side, that uptight little dickweed. However, considering the regrets that congressmen expressed after the bill passed, I think this will have a hard time becoming permament.

One Senator voted against it, and less than fifty Congressman did so. Do NOT be complacent! We need to organize to defeat this terribly unAmerican peice of legislation.

What kills me is that Americans would actually name this "PATRIOT Act". I mean, naming any kind of act "PATRIOT Act" is silly enough.
I bet that in 2010 at latest, "FUZZY BUNNIES AND ABRAHAM LINCOLN" act sends anybody any government official anywhere doesn't like to slave labor camps and allows the President to feast on the tender meat of the freshborn baby.

It's not any sillier than "Operation Iraqi Freedom." I don't know when we Yanks starting taking ourselves so seriously, but I don't like it. We should take a page or two from the Brits and come up with some good operation codenames. I loved the whole 007 theme...

I think Operation Iraqi Liberation would have been better. I bet it would have got acronymized pretty fast, though.
In same vein, "Operation Arabic Freedom" would have been fine...

I heard a rumor that Operation Iraqi Freedom started out with a different name that was too inflammatory, so they changed it. (Like Infinite Justice -> Enduring Freedom.) Anyone else hear anything about this?
I like it better when they have the computer pick the name, and you get stuff like "Operation Azure Badger."

I miss the good old days of "Operation: Overlord" and "Operation: Anvil".
The Germans had some good ones too, "Operation: Citadel", "Operation:Weserubung" (pronounced Vey-se-rue-boong) and so on.

The advantage to haveing a never ending war on terrorism is that the crisis never passes, and so the measures stay

Can someone explain how come most congresspeople / senators will vote for this crap ? I would have thought almost all Americans were actually loving their freedom, and their representatives love it as well. Why is this text so much unopposed ?

What's wrong che, aren't you a patriot.
Anyway, I agree with Spiffor. People are scared so they give up their freedoms willingly. In that sense the terrorists have won.

I love how the Republican party wants to spread freedom to other countries, but restricts it domestically. And shame on the spineless Democrats that don't stand up against this crap. They're just as bad as the Reps.

IIRC, not many of them read it and Ashcroft pushed for a quick vote on it.
Now as for weather the law is crap or not, I don't see it as being substantively worse than the Prevention of terrorism act and the like passed by Parliament in the UK. I'll let you make your own judgement on if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Gee, I sure am suprised.
I seem to recall people telling me not to worry about the Patriot Act in this very forum because Congress decided to include a sunset clause.

To give up freedom in the name of freedom. Sometimes my fellow Americans really disturb me.
MTG, I know you have stated that due process must be involved in the execution of most of the Patriot act provisions. This does not make me feel safer. If due process could be executed to remove the rights of free speech for thousands at a time would you feel safe?(just a what if.)
This is a BAD law. Che is correct. Write your representative today!

The Patriot Act isn't any worse than the anti-terrorism laws that France has had for years. You would never know that from cruising Poly, however...
That being said, I still don't want it to be permanent. I'm not comfortable copying the French.
