Poll: should I go see Paul McCartney?
Heh, my first poll

Okay, here's my dilemma. Being an avid Beatles fan for over 35 years I have the opportunity to see Paul McCartney live here in Arnhem. He gives a 2 1/2 hour show and plays a lot of his old Beatle songs. Just imagine (sorry John ) hearing Eight Days A Week or Sergeant Peppers being played live by the man who wrote those songs. The trouble is that I'm more a Lennon man than a McCartney man. McCartney is also the guy who wrote **** like Obla Di Obla Da, Yesterday, The Long And Windy Road etc, and he was responsible for the Beatles breaking up.

Plus, it'll cost me 70 Euro's, and a long time ago I promised myself never to pay more than 40 guilders (about 18 euro's) for a live concert, no matter who played.

So, what would my fellow Apo's do?

1) Do you like his music and tolerate hearing the bad as well as the good?
2) Can you comfortably pay for the ticket?
3) Do you have time in your schedule?

If you can answer all of those questions with a yes, I would go to the concert,

Dino, 2 and 3 are a yes. About being able to stand his music, everything he did after the beatles broke up is absolutely **** (remember Ebony And Ivory?) but he will be playing his Beatle numbers also, and it's the last chance to see one of the original Beatles play these songs. (However, if he plays Yesterday I'm going to walk out)

Why?

Not going to hear many Beatles' songs live nowadays. If you can afford the concert, you should go.

Because I'm with Lennon on this :"The only thing you did was Yesterday, but after all, you're just another day

McCartney wrote the songs my parents liked...

You should, without question, go.
McCartney was THE BEST I've EVER seen, and that includes the one and only, Eric Clapton.
Enjoy history.

of course you should gop, if you are asking yourself whether you should go and put in 2 and 3 as the questions (distance and euros) it is clear you will regret later if you do not go.

There's nothing wrong with Obla di, obla da, life goes on, RA! It's a purely fun song, which is just damn pleasant.

I'd go if it were free, but I wouldn't pay 70 Euros. But then again, you probably have a lot more money than I do.
Yesterday isn't that bad either. Plus, it's really short, so you probably wouldn't even make it out of the stadium before it ended. Not a big deal, you know?

I'm not a big fan of his wings stuff, but I'd sit through it to get to the good stuff.

Sloww, better than Clapton? If you say so that means a lot

Reds, I'm way over 40, even older than Sloww I still can remember the day She Loves You came out

One Foot, that's exactly what I'm afraid of, hitting myself later for missing out on this. But still, McCartney...

Now, I haven't seen the guy live, so I can't judge on that question. But...

I think it's bordering on insulting that billionaire McCartney would charge his fans 70 Euro for that concert, and that's even if he has made some brilliant songs etc. etc. I'd choose not to go on principle, unless McCartney and his music really, really meant that much to me. And, ehr, he will indeed be playing Yesterday because he's going to stick to the playlist of his new live set, except when playing in Rome where the set will be quieter because of the bad health of the Pope.

I'd pay 70 Euro for Eric Clapton any day, though. But I'd hope he'd do the McCartney and go with a playlist dominated by his "old" material instead of the new laid-back stuff - to put it blunt, White Room instead of Change the World.

I HATE THE LONG AND WINDY SONG THOUGH! I'd put my fingers in my ears and shout "I am not listening" over and over again if they put that on.

Vanilla Sky is a brilliant song though. I wonder if the rest on that cd are up to that level.

Monk, if Clapton plays stuff from Layla or his Cream days I would pay a lot more than that

But I'm a Beatles fanatic for longer than I care to remember and this is the last chance to some of these great songs being played live by one of them.

Imagine (once again, sorry John, where ever you are) seeing Sergeant Pepper being played live...

Okay, principles are always nice to have, but I guess they can be convinient to ignore as well. It sounds like you're going to regret it later on if you don't, so I'm ending up voting for you to go. I'm still wondering why I didn't see 'Pumpkins on their farewell tour back in 2000.

On another note, I thought the popular approach to that particular question was that Yoko Ono, not Paul McCartney, broke up The Beatles.

That's the popular approach. By '69 Lennon was too doped out to even know what was happening and he had to rely on Yoko to even wipe his own ass. Harrison was into religion to care and Ringo was just Ringo.

By that time the Beatles were no longer a group, everyone did their own thing, but when McCartney pushed his brother in law as their new manager the whole thing blew up.

Yoko was just an excuse, I feel kind of sorry for her, without her the Beatles would have broken apart even sooner...

McCartney rocks. I definitely go if I were you. I am not a big fan of classic rock, nor am I a fan of most of Paul's stuff post-Beatles (Band on the Run and Uncle Albert are both great songs though) but I am obsessed with the Beatles.

BTW, I would walk out if Paul *didn't* play "Yesterday".

Totally agree!!

Without McCartney, Lennon is just a wierd hippie singer who becomes no more famous than Janis Joplin (if he gets remembered at all). Without Lennon, McCartney is just a silly little love song writer who is no more famous than Elvis Costello. They needed each other in order to succeed. Their after Beatles stuff was no where near what they used to make. Though McCartney wrote the best Beatles tunes like 'Yesterday' and 'Hey Jude'.

Drake, I just severly dislike people that push up Lennon and push down McCartney. It's silly. The only reason for it is because Lennon died in 1980 and became deified. John, Paul, George, and Ringo needed each other. They were the defintion of 'band'. John stopped Paul from being too sappy and cheesy, and Paul stopped John from being too far out and too wierd. George kept the balance with his brilliance with the guitar, and Ringo, well, he was just Ringo . Peacemaker extrodinare.

I'm with you on this; Lennon has become a martyr and I get really sick of it sometimes. McCartney was just as good a songwriter (better IMHO), but he doesn't get anywhere near the respect that Lennon does. It just isn't right...
