Does anyone actually beat arcade games?
I never have enough quarters
Those games are impossible. I can never do it. In fact if there were no such things as save games I would never beat any game . I'm just not good enough.

It's pretty easy with the fighting games like Tekken and Soul Calibur and such. Winning those on only one continue isn't that hard.
I've never go to the Arcades, but theoretically I could do it.

I haven't been in arcade game halls (?) since I was half the age I am now, and back then, most games were impossible to beat...

I used to beat Streetfighter in the arcade as a kid. We competed to see who could do it with the least money. But fighting games are easier once you learn the "special moves" - Oh and I beat Bubble Bobble by simply shoving money in it.

Wow!!
I haven't played at an arcade since Mortal Kombat 3 was all the rage. Can't say that I ever beat any game in the arcade even with a large supply of quarters.

Haven't played any for a while, but I did beat SF2 (which was *the* game when I was a young teenager) with 1 30p.

Games I have "beaten": 1943 (2 players only), Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 3, Street Fighter vs X-Men, a wrestling game (2 players only). There are some games without endings, one can play on and on and on. In my younger days I was very good at: Robotron 2084, Missile Command and Gaunlet. I could play Gaunlet for hours on a quarter. Those were the days...

I saw someone complete Operation Wolf once at the fair, only in one player mode aswell, about 30 people crowded round the box as usual pushing, quite impressive to see his reflexes with the light gun though, git.

I only arcade games I was ever really great at were Gorf and Galaga. I don't think either was ever beatable, as they just repeated forever.

Street Fighter? Back then, as I played Arcade games, Street Fighter was not developed yet... The game I played most, was some game, where you played a cave-man (2 player game), where you had to watch out for rival cave-men (who has stolen the girls ) and dino's... Don't remember what it was called though... Only managed to get to level 2-3, before I ran out of money...

Actually, I like it when the arcades offered a nice mix of video games and pinball machines. Now all they have are these mahjong and fighting games. Dreadful.

One of the best arcade games, in terms of design, is Tempest. I sucked at the game, but the design has always intrigued me.

here's a silly scary moment. Back in the C64 days I loaded up a game called Exploding Fist. It took a while to load in that games. I wasn't sure if there was supposed to be sound so I turned the tv volume up. And then this earth shattering scream comes from the game and that scared the **** out of me and my friend who were waiting to play. . The game itself wasn't scary though.

I loved those Turtles games, playing them co-op was a blast.
In fact almost all co-op games are great, especially Gauntlet.

I don't think many people completely understood this game (myself included), but I loved it as well. The early 80s ray-trace vector graphic arcade games were all pretty good in my book. There's just something about them.

Lost Vikings as an arcade game?
Where was this, Solver?
I've played both, an have yet to beat the game even with the codes. Some of those levels are tough!

Pac Man was beatable, as the game died on screen 256. Now the record is to see how fast you can beat the game.
I "beat" Robotron: 2084 in that, on factory settings, I rolled-over all my extra men from 255 to 0. That was a 25,000,000 point game.

Eh, what is Lost Vikes then? I beat Lost Vikings quite a long time ago... some levels taking a damn high amount of time, but I figured it all out by myself, one of my proud achievements. That was during the time when I was way too sick to go out or work, so I just sat there playing the vikes .

That game is called "Caveman Ninja" it was eventually ported to the SNES in its early days as "Joe and Mac". Also, Tempest which was discussed early had a quasi-remake called Gyruss.
For now, anybody who has even a passing interest in Arcade Games would do well to check out the MAME emulator. It'll probably be your only chance to win Metal Slug without taking a second mortage on the house.

Thanks, I was just trying to think of the name of Gyruss. I used to play this religiously on the C-64.

There was a student in my undergrad school who was great at playing Tempest, and I used to stand there to watch the game for hours on end.
IIRC, there were only two games with colour vector graphics: Tempest and Major Havoc, both made by Atari. Are there anymore?
