Room 101.

The door opened again. A guard came in, carrying something made of wire, a box or basket of some kind. He set it down on the further table. Because of the position in which O'Brien was standing. Winston could not see what the thing was.
'The worst thing in the world,' said O'Brien, 'varies from individual to individual. It may be burial alive, or death by fire, or by drowning, or by impalement, or fifty other deaths. There are cases where it is some quite trivial thing, not even fatal.'
He had moved a little to one side, so that Winston had a better view of the thing on the table. It was an oblong wire cage with a handle on top for carrying it by. Fixed to the front of it was something that looked like a fencing mask, with the concave side outwards. Although it was three or four metres away from him, he could see that the cage was divided lengthways into two compartments, and that there was some kind of creature in each. They were rats.
'In your case, said O'Brien, 'the worst thing in the world happens to be rats.'

So what's in your Room 101?

Still one of my favourite novels.
My room 101 would probably contain many, many wasps. I've always been afraid of them.

Same here. In fact it was a wasp I found buzzing around in my bedroom that was the inspiration for this thread.

They really are the worst life form ever...
I really liked the concept that getting someone to genuinly want the bad thing to happen to their loved one mentally destroys them.
Maybe we should build a room 101 and test it out on some celebrity couples - would make good reality TV

Nope, nothing that is revealed. Room 101 is simply the end part of a whole torture process designed to make the individual surrender all will to The Party.
It's used against Winston (mainly) to get him to fall out of love with his girlfriend and co-conspirator (though she's really a stupid ditz with little political motivation ).

interesting.
mine would probably have venomous spiders in it (i loathe spiders with a passion).
but my geniune fear of death would be far more dramatic / deep. i would walk into the room, and there would be nothingness, and i would die a slow death (painful or painless, whichever), all alone.

My room would have the girl of my dreams in there with a really dumb, ignorant yet "hott" *****, and she would tell me she likes me but continue to go for him.
...Big Brother must be watching...

You know, I sometimes get freaked out just by the thought of my hard drive being so close to me. It always conjures images of it breaking and having shrapnel fly all over the place and stuff.
I've never considered myself to haev any phobias, but I realize now that I do.
... I think that there'd be lots of knives, too. Especially if they're combined with the machinery.
And, ehm... competely off topic: Does anyone know how to disable backspace from going back a page in IE? (I forget how I fixed this before... an update to a newer version maybe? )

Nothing but a mirror. Something feels wrong. I go to the mirror, and see that there are hundreds of giant bugs in my hair.

As I understod it room 101 contains what ever it is that you fear the most. The torture beforehand is to find out what this is and to prepare the victim for it. When the person is taken into room 101 this will be the point when he is finally broken down and will be reshaped to anything the party wants it to be.
