Aggregate in Soccer
I was watching the Real Madrid vs Manchester United game and i'm wondering how the aggregate score used to determine the winner is calculated....

Goals scored away count double.

Goals scored away count more than goals scored at home. So if the result is a tie, the winner will be the team that scored more away goals.

Right, so if ManU wins at home 3-1, and loses @ Real Madrid 2-0, Real Madrid wins, because though both teams scored 3 goals, Real scored one away, and all of ManU's goals came at home.
I think.

If we take Real - Man U match as an example of a "clear win", we see that:
Leg 1: Real - Man U 3-1
Leg 2: Man U - Real 4-3
Total: Real - Man U 6-5
Real's scored more than Man U and thus advances in the tournament.
Now we look at the Inter - Valencia clash:
Leg 1: Inter - Valencia 1-0
Leg 2: Valencia - Inter 2-1
Total: Inter - Valencia 2-2
However, goals scored away have more value, and because Inter managed to score away, but Valencia did not, Inter advances.
The last case is Juventus - Barcelona:
Leg 1: Juventus - Barcelone 1-1
Leg 2: Barcelona - Juventus 1-1
Total: Juventus - Barcelona 2-2
A dead heat. When such a situation occurs, extra time of 2*15 minutes will be played (no "golden goal"). Juventus scored once in ET, and at the end of 120 minutes of play, it was 1-2 to Juventus so they advanced.
If no goals are scored in ET, a penalty shootout will have to decide who advances.

Well damn it. This is basic knowledge. It's the natural order of things. I think it's even in the Bible. In the Koran for sure.

Yep. And it's in the Brazilian Constitution, too. That's why we're soooo good...

During the ManU/Real match yesterday, Real, already leading 3-1 from the first leg scored in the 50th to go up 2-1 on the day. That second away goal gave them the tie breaking advantage over ManU from the score of the first match and required ManU to score better than a 4-2 victory since that 5-5 aggregate draw would see them lose on away goals. At that time both teams knew ManU needed to score at least 4 more goals in the last 40 minutes to advance.
You may also wonder about replays...
In some competitions, such as England's FA Cup, if the first match is drawn, then a second match is played at the opposing home field. If the score of the second match is a draw at the end of regulation time, then two extra periods are played. If the scores are still level then it goes to penalty kicks to decide the winner.

Yep. The text says "Ordem e Progresso", and this means exactly "Goals scored away count more than goals scored at home”.

In the good old days the FA cup didn't stop at one replay match. Those where the days...

"Ordem e Progresso"
Well I guess it could have been about the offside rule as well...
