DM discussion: First city placement and improvement
First of all, I would like to thank BFM for getting us a screenie of the start location so we could all be here to discuss this, instead of an in-chat decision.
For a look, see this thread: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...threadid=84259
From this info alone, the best site appears NW to me. This would give us fresh water and two bonus grassland to begin with.
Unless the scout finds a cow to the south, that would be my plan.
Also, discuss the benefits of mines or roads first. Personally, I go mine first as non-industrious.

Roading is faster, it takes only 3 turns to road and 5 to mine. I would road first, but have no strong feelings either way as I have not done any sort of in depth study / analysis of benifits....
I assume we are going to move the scout south onto the mountain as discussed PRIOR to moving the settler. I agree, from what we now know the position to the NW is the best.

Assuming we move the settler on Turn 1 (which we'd be insane not to, IMO ) mining the bonus grass start would make a 1-turn difference in the second warrior's production. But we'd lose 6 commerce. Tough choice.

Unless the Scout findes something very interesting in the south NW is the best place to settle. And I think roading first would be best.

The scout should move due south one tile - and depending on what he sees - due south for a second tile. That will actually give us a better range of view south than moving to the mountain. And from the minimap it would appear that south is how we want to develop anyway.
I also vote for the NW city site.

NW City would be fine (I'm of the opinion that an exact location for the capial city without further info at this point will have little determination for our ultimate outcome ).
I agree with Beta that our further city development should not go north first. Till we know more of the map, south, east or west are all possible.
And road first please.

NW is great, so long as it is on the river. Make sure it displays 1 comm before moving.

it SHOULD be, NYE. The only time I've noticed a diagonal NOT having the 1 commerce is at the 'head' of the river next to the mountain/hill.
Will definately check, though.
Ill do a study on how much that extra commerce would actually reduce our research.

We should move the scout onto the mountain and see. We need to find the sea... Can you imagine vikings without it?

The Vikings? Nope, they all became English.
I don't know if this is good or not...

1 tile west definately is a river tile. I'm not so sure about NW.

NW sounds great to me.
But, just to be sure there isn't another infernal jungle just around the corner, move the scout first.
