Best Album Ever
Music threads seem to always be popular here, and I was discussing this with my brother not too long ago.
What is your favorite album (or top 3) of all time? Please avoid compilations, "Best Of's", soundtracks, etc.
I think my number one is Between Tenth and Eleventh by the Charlatans UK, and if I had to pick a top three (not necessarily in order, except for numer one) I'd probably say:
1. Charlatans UK Between Tenth and Eleventh
2. The Stone Roses (unnamed first album)
3. U2 Achtung Baby or Joshua Tree (tie)

There are few..
These are from my earlier days (not exactly my choice of music anymore, but they still are frequently played in my stereos, and I'll never get bored to these)
The Prodigy - Experience (1992 and still going hard)
Daft Punk - Daftendirekt
Kraftwerk ... damn it I forgot the title..
Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire
Pulp Fusion - Revenge of the ghetto grooves
.. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here .

Dimitri from Paris - A night at the playboy mansion. Great!
Claude Young - DJ Kicks (great atmosphere for people who likes this stuff)
Also basically anything from Detroit.. techno that is. Underground Resistance, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Juan Atkins.. just bring it on!

Amendments
An Addition:
1. "The Beatles" The Beatles
2. "Living In The Material World" George Harrison
3. "Rubber Soul" The Beatles
4. "Let It Be" The Beatles
5. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" The Beatles
6. "Abbey Road" The Beatles
7. "All Things Must Pass" George Harrison
8. "Revolver" The Beatles
9. "Brainwashed" George Harrison
10. "Electro-Shock Blues" Eels
11. "De Stijl" The White Stripes
12. "Plastic Ono Band" John Lennon
And Some Explanations:
1. "The Beatles" The Beatles
The white album. Need I say more? "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Sexy Sadie", "Back In The USSR", "Helter Skelter", "Everybody's Got Something To Hide (Except For Me And My Monkey", "Yer Blues"... Almost every one a masterpiece.
2. "Living In The Material World" George Harrison
The title track, "Be Here Now", "The Lord Loves The One Who Loves The Lord"... I'm not a religious person, but for some reason, I can really get into Harrison's spiritual stuff.
3. "Rubber Soul" The Beatles
Poppy as all get-out? You better believe it! And I love it. The best pure-pop album of all time, I'd wager. Some of it's silly, some of it's poignant, but it's all brilliant.
4. "Let It Be" The Beatles
A lot of people seem to not be so hot for this offering, but I think it's up there with their best. "I Me Mine" is possibly my favourite Beatles song.
5. "Sgt. Pepper's..." The Beatles
The mono recording has to be heard to be believed. Just leaps and bounds ahead of the stereo one... Even the drilled-into-our-consciousnesses classics gain new life.
6. "Abbey Road" The Beatles
I'm not as into the medley as most, but I still love the album. "Here Comes The Son", "Oh! Darling", "Golden Slumbers"... Etched in my brain.
7. "All Things Must Pass" George Harrison
A little too long for it's own good, but still fantastic. "Run Of The Mill" sticks out as a favourite, for some odd reason. "If Not For You", "I'd Have You Anytime"... Really beautiful stuff.
8. "Revolver" The Beatles
Not quite Rubber Soul, but still a classic. "For No One" & "Got To Get You Into My Life" are personal favourites.
9. "Brainwashed" George Harrison
Too soon? Maybe. But I'm sticking it here anyways. "Rising Sun", "Last Saturday Night", "Brainwashed", "Pisces Fish"... all are on par with his '70s stuff.
10. "Electro-Shock Blues" eels
Ah, finally, some diversity. "Elizabeth On The Bathroom Floor" is heartbreaking, and the title track is strangely uplifting. The album runs the gamut of emotions, every one disturbingly real.
11. "De Stijl" The White Stripes
I have a strange love affair with this album. At first, I didn't get too into it, but now I think it's definitely their best work. "Hello, Operator" alone is worth the price of the CD. Me likey.
12. "Plastic Ono Band" John Lennon
Eons ahead of "Imagine". "Working Class Hero" is a great blue-collar anthem. I'm not the biggest Lennon-booster, but this album just gels with me.
****************
Well, that was unnecessary.

The Otto Klemperer/Philharmonia Orchestra 1962 recording of the Brahms Requiem. Something clicked, and the recording is inspirational.
The Wilhelm Furtwangler/Berlin Philharmonic live recording of the Bruckner 9th Symphony from 1944. This is simply one of the most amazing performances ever recorded. As the war was winding down, the BPO gave this concert--and nobody came. The audience was empty, but Furtwangler conducted it anyway...and the result is stupendous, even if in mono sound.
Herbert von Karajan/Vienna Philharmonic recording of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, with Nicolai Ghiaurov, Ludovic Speiss and Martti Talvela. The cast is superb, the orchestra brilliant and the chorus stunning. Only Karajan's slow tempos in certain places are less-than-satisfactory, but the overall effect is stunning.
