Evolution of the banana
I'm almost certain this has been asked before, but it's not in the FAQ, so:
Where on earth did the "banana" joke come from? You know, how every poll is supposed to have a banana option, the recurring reference to banana worship...I'm guessing it's an inside joke. Idunno. Is there a specific meaning to the fruit?
I have much to learn, senseis. Forgive me.

I think there was a poll, a long time ago, about the new nonsensical option that should come in polls. Banana won, beating something furry IIRC.
There is a more complete answer by gramphos in the Civ3 Democracy game forum (very beginning of it), but I'm too lazey right now to look for the link.

Well, the Banana is a phalic symbol after all. And yes, Spiffor is correct in a poll being ran to choose a "wild card" answer...and given the number of gays/Bi's in Apolyton (myself included - gay that is, not Bi ) - the winner of the poll was only natural.
Ok, maybe my definition is a bit jaded...but it's still based on facts.

During the reign of the banana, several challengers have attempted to dethrone it. Most notably, Mr. Fun's campaign for strawberries, and the more recent "light fluffy pancakes" option. However, the banana has taken all comers and emerged on top each time.

'poly isn't the only place that has the 'banana' option... slashdot being the prime example. I never even ran into it until the SMAC Demo game here... though prior to the Demo game I wasn't much of a venturing member either... (venturing as in going to other forums other than those in which I PBEMed.)
How long has the banana been around? (Anybody have the archived poll handy?)
...of course... in the SMAC Demo game the 'banana' got replaced by the Xenobanana thanks to our need to make 'Xeno' a preffix to everything...

The Banana is the supreme and inmortal leader of every single forum here in 'Poly.
Also, the love for the banana (platano in some countries) has grown in our hearts, so I think that it's a must a new Apolyton logo with the allmighty BANANA!
EDIT: the banana attach doesn't shows

Sad to say that the history of the banana isn't as interesting as the banana option itself.

I think, that once the word "abstain" was replaced with ******* by apolyton censor. After this furrified apolyton users called this bananism and replaced abstain with banana

Actually, Badams' galley does sink...you just have to watch it for a very long time - but be aware it sinks rather fast!
The only reason I know this is because a few weeks ago, his avatar caught my eye (but only slightly) when it suddenly sank! So I had a few minutes to spare so I watched it...and watched it...and watched it some more. Low and behold, his galley was shot upon and sank.
My question to Badam is: Why in the hell did you set it to so long of an interval?!?...but then I guess that explains your message of "Nothing to see here, move along. But there is something to see there.

This has been my avatar since I hit the magic number early this month.
Before my current avatar, I used the galley avatar.
I give out my official noprize (stolen from Marvel) to alexnm for noticing (remember your comment? )
And I give out my official persistant patient noprize (also stolen from Marvel) to Wittlich taking the time to watch.
Subtlety, my dear Wittlich, subtlety. Your second paragraph tells me my avatar serves its purpose.
Now I wait for this thread to get burried for the next challengers to step up.

Ah, you all forget that Banana came out of Pollgate the day where Ming banned about 5-10 people for 1-2 days becuase of the nonsensical polls all with the word banana in it the first official day of Bananas in the OT... then somehow it migrated to the on-topic... and hit it big in democracy games- but it was primarily an OT thing in 2001
and I think Stefu came up with it

Humph! I noticed the sinking galley a week or so ago, and even tried to hit Print Screen quick enough to get a look at the thing that looks like a Chinese ideogram.
