Ummmm - could it have something to do with the king not being on it's color?

There is a solution for it. You need to move the pieces around, monolith.

I know that, but in the graphic that was presented to me, the king was not on his color. A king must be on his color for the game to begin.

Are the pointy-crown graphics the kings and the rounded ones the queens? If no, then you've got a point Mono, but if yes then... *nods at Asher's post with a grin*

Actually Asher (or I should say MJW), I opened up the chess board but realized the game just started - yes, you have to move the pieces around to figure the puzzle out...but I lost interest because it's just too much thought process to waste on it - especially when I'm gearing up for my finals!

I did it the CSgeek way and used google.
I solved the problem in < 10 seconds.

Actually, the queen has to be on its colour for the game to begin.

That's an amusing little solution.

Of course, no one is ever going to make those moves in an actual game...

spoilsport! I once beat a kid with I believe it's called 'the fool's gambit' - the one where you win in 3 or four moves. It was fun.

IIRC, the moves have to be forced, in a chess puzzle. I mean, the result can't be avoided. But this isn't a real puzzle, is it?

There was a game I played in high school once where I'd lost my queen and bishops and the enemy had even promoted an extra queen.
Without him noticing, I pushed a pawn all the way to the end and mated his entrenched king literally one move away from mate myself.

the 4 move mate (With the queena nd bishop) is called a scholars mate I beleive
it can be stoped anywhere along the way (most easiliy by the move of a pawn

Alinestra - that sounds like something I'd do!!!
there was this one kid I'd play on the network at school against, and he would ALWAYS nab my queen within the first few moves - but I'd end up always winning. It was great!

It's not a puzzle in the sense that moves have to be forced, no. It would be pretty hard to force a mate from 1. e4.......if it wasn't, I think chess would have gone out of style long ago.

its a different type of puzzle called a helpmate-- you look to see if you can achieve the result if both sides are actively seeking it

Yes the four mover is called sholars mate and it is the first thing you teach kids to avoid. It is very easy to stop and the early movement of the queen prior to developing other pieces, makes her a target.
The two move mate only occurrs through stupidity -- White plays pawns to f3 (or f4) and g4-- Black plays e6 or e5 followed by Qh4 checkmate
1. f3 e6 2. g4 Qh4 ++
