You call the Atari ST obscure?
What the hell is the Spectrum?

I suspect the amount of Spectrum owners vastly outweighs the amount of Atari ST owners.

I'm not sure I know the game, though. A Dizzy game, maybe?

No much older.........it was THE game around 1985. It cost £9.95, which was a princely sum to a 7 year old, but the gameplay was head and shoulders above 95% of games at the time.
More clues: You are armed with a sword. Guards patrol the castle in which the powerful tome is located, and although they can be killed their helmet remains on the ground and they come back to life when you reenter the room!
Also guarding the castle are ogres (very tough) and the nigh indestructible ghosts, which you must locate items hidden around the castle in order to deal with.

Sorry, I don't think I ever played this game. '85 was a few years before my time.

I'm guessing 'Sabre Wulf' by ocean i think(or Imagine).
I had an american 8bit at the time and really wanted to play this game.

Again right era but no. Come on, these are just shots in the dark!
Anyone who owned a speccy in their heyday would get it immediately from that description.........I'll give it a few hours to see if anyone pops in, then I'll post a screenshot.

'Knight Lore'?
In my defence i'll say they are more like shots into murky twilight rather than true darkness(thanks for bearing with a non-speccy owner!)
I'll make this my last guess as i've run out of ideas.....unless it was a 'Horrace goes....' game.

Ding Ding Ding! That would be FAIRLIGHT.
There's even a remake floating around somewhere. But the original owner Edge didn't approve so it was scrapped.

Well including Tuberski that would actually make two games to guess. Here's the first:
This game by any other name should be 'hide and seek'
Because every time the observer takes a peek
His mighty gaze will be looking over your shoulder
And he might even turn you into a boulder....

Us old bastards are hogging the game now, so for my next game I'll do a more recent one.
Platform: Amiga, although it appeared on other platforms as well I think.
What happens if you 'borrow' plots from The Running Man, The Lawnmower Man, Total Recall, They Live and Blade Runner and mix them together? You create the plot of this game. You take the role of a young scientist who, by inventing a pair of glasses which can read molecular density, discovers that aliens have infiltrated society. Once the aliens realise this, they kidnap you and drop you on their planet with a blank mind. This is the definitive platform adventure.
One of my all-time favourite games.

I already know what game Drspike's referring to now but I'll be modest and let the others have a go first.

FrustratedPoet(in ref to the post that isn't here anymore!) i think you were thinking of Anotherworld, another good game on the amiga(very hard i seem to remember).
Ok i'll give it a go. I have a dilema though, i could choose a modern game and the clue would most likely include 'was rushed out unfinished for Xmas...' or i could choose an older game and maybe no-one will get it for a while.......
here you are then
EDIT: sorry that was too hard i think!
ok again...
You were an insect and had to shoot other insects, beatles, bugs etc
