Yeah that's the one. I was googling and found the answer to my question about Flashback's prequel about 10 seconds after I posted.
If I'd google'd less and posted earlier I might have beaten you. Oh well ... that's what I get for having a hazy memory I suppose.

No not centipede - we're talking 90's here, not so long ago
The insects and bugs were large and well drawn, you could play it two player, but the second players insect was smaller.
It had tough compitition but was definately in the top three for shooters at the time(i liked it best but the other two sold more copies).

Platform was 90's 16bits, it may have got a PC release. I have to go in 10 mins and won't be back untill late tomorrow. Maybe i'll let people guess alot and the first one who posts wins?
Another hint the graphics really took you into the insect world, blades of grass, flowers all to believable scale. Excellent sounds - huge poping explosions as you wasted all on the screen.

Me too... but still interesting to see how people can describe a game, with as few words as possible

When you said 16 bit I thought you meant it was a console game, so I didn't think about it much.
But now I know the platform is the Amiga.........it's Apidya, just one of many classic team17 games.

Apidya- Correct! I guess Dr.Spike is the winner!
Yeah a bee or a wasp. It was a very hard game - don't think i got past level 2 or 3. But it was very captivating - the graphics were really well done, it always seemed like i was learning natural history while blasting all the ladybirds, butterflies and bugs!

/me is smug in WoA's general direction.
New game: Played on the Sega Saturn, this game was an innovative 3D shooter, which features 360 degree views and shooting possibilities.

Ok I wont do any more console games after this......just wanted to provide some variety. Also, the record here on oldies from the Spectrum and C64 days isn't good.
Looking back over my clues I would add that in this game you flew.

Clues
Your character is called Eric, although you could change the name of every character in the game.
Make shields flash to reveal the secret code.
"It was him, Sir, I cannot tell a lie"
A very original game - I can't imagne what genre this could fit in. I've never played any other game like it.

Bingo.
I was wondering if the clues were too easy, but since so many people were complaining about Speccy games I might have given away too much.

Next game:
Landmark strategy game from early 90s, on the Amiga.
This game also was pricey in its time, about £30. You play against up to three computer opponents, the aim is to simply conquer an island. Having selected one to try for the first step is for both human and computer characters to stake out a sector of the island. The location chosen (if the island is large enough to offer a choice) will actually have some bearing on later events.
The are 27 islands in all.
The sound in this game was head and shoulders above anything else in the field......it truly was a work of art.
The gameplay was fantastic, and it had longevity in spades.

They're meant to give others a chance too - but I'm too slow. Its expanding the knowledge of peoples' classic games too.
