Out of curiosity - what's wrong with pods everywhere? I would think it would be an early advantage (if you got some extra tech) but in the long term, there are alot more potential alien artifacts....

With the Pirates around? It's perfectly possible to win the tech race with the pirates doing no reasearch whatsoever - they collect pods like the Hive racks up genocides.
