Arianne - Komm, Süsser Tod, from the End of Evangelion soundtrack.
Nice pleasant lyrics.
Quote:
|
I know, I know I've let you down
I've been a fool to myself
I thought I could
live for no one else
But not through all the hurt and pain
Its time for me to respect
the ones you love
mean more than anything
So with sadness in my heart
I feel the best thing I could do
is end it all
and leave forever
whats done is done, it feels so bad
what once was happy now is sad
I'll never love again
my world is ending
I wish that I could turn back time
cos now the guilt is all mine
cant live without the trust from those you love.
I know we can't forget the past
you cant forget love and pride
because of that it's killing me inside
It all returns to nothing, it all comes
tumbling down, tumbling down,
tumbling down,
it all returns to nothing, I just keep
letting me down, letting me down,
letting me down,
in my heart of hearts,
I know that I called never love again
I've lost everything
everything
that matters to me,
matter in this world

Chopin's Funeral March, although it's surprisingly peppy at times.
I like Chopin's Nocturnes as well, especially Op72 No1 and his Fantaisie Imprompu in Dflat minor. I have on one or more occasions played both of these pieces naked in public places, but not been caught. Yet.
Some Vangelis is quite moody, especially Abraham's song. Many of the Blade Runner themes are good for introspection.

Wasn't there some group called "Stabbing Westwards" a couple of years back? If so, most likely all of the stuff from it was mighty depressing....it probably somewhat falls into the "hard rock" category though....beats me.

Depressing instrumentals, eh? I'm thinking roksteady versions of Jazz standards. Although they lean more towards the whistful/mournful side.
Tommy McCook and The Supersonics - Starry Night
Tommy McCook and The Supersonics - What The World Needs Now is Love
Tommy McCook - The Shadow of Your Smile
Tommy McCook and Lester Sterling - Inez
The Crystalites - Stop That Man (inclued the vocal "lalalalalalala ooh yeah")
Lyn Taitt and The Jets - To Sir With Love
Lester Sterling - Super Special
Or in an emergency:
Don Drummond - Eastern Standard Time
Val Bennett - The Russians Are Coming (Take Five)
Roland Alphonso - El Torro
The Crystalites - Bombshell
Carl Bryan - Way of Life
Tommy McCook - Eight Years After
However, since you're american I'm assuming you're more into Henrix-style classic-rock jams. I'd therefore suggest "Maggot Brain" by the Funkadelic as it is by far the most emotionally loaded such jam ever recorded.

My favorite depressing song ever is Randy Newman's "Old Man"; it can leave me in a fetal position for hours. The lyrics:
Quote:
|
Everyone has gone away
Can you hear me? Can you hear me?
No one cared enough to stay
Can you hear me? Can you hear me?
You must remember me old man
I know that you can if you try
So just open up your eyes, old man
Look who's come to say goodbye
The sun has left the sky, old man
The birds have flown away
And no one came to cry, old man
Goodbye, old man, goodbye
You want to stay, I know you do
But it ain't no use to try
'Cause I'll be here-and I'm just like you
Goodbye, old man, goodbye
Won't be no God to comfort you
You taught me not to believe that lie
You don't need anybody
Nobody needs you
Don't cry, old man, don't cry
Everybody dies

how about Wish?

So many stars were out there but none of them did fall
I guess none wanted to carry the burden of it all
A time to cry, so much time to cry, little time to say goodbye
And I would tell you I'll be brave and you'd know that it's a lie
And the days'll turn weeks and the weeks'll turn years and I'll know that you were wrong
There's nothing at the rainbows end but just another song
So close and yet so far away is the mask she wears today
It seems the open hand is closing, some things shell never give away
Thelena, wear the crown of golden thorns
Thelena, nail your hands onto your kite
No spotlight on your self-made cross but your eyes come shining through
Is desire just temptation or do angels long too?
Don't need wings to be an angel, just the wind to pull you up
No strings, no wings, no songs to sing as we dance into the sun
Thelena, wear the crown of golden thorns
Thelena, nail your hands onto your kite

The leaves were falling early, the year fortune looked away
Gold and green looked brighter then, gold seems grey today
The hands of the clock never went my way, nothing ever did
So in the arms of indifference is where I'm going to stay
Set the burning sails (horizon)
Time weighs more than gold (a heartbeat)
More than shoulders can bear
All the years aflame (we're yearning)
Burnmarks never fade (though we are)
Going nowhere fast
Have I lost you for the first time, it won't be the last
For I'll lose you everytime my dreams fall apart, to dust
I may have questions, I may have answers but I sure don't have you
No one shakes an empty hand, let alone embrace the man
Set the burning sails (horizon)
Time weighs more than gold (a heartbeat)
More than shoulders can bear
All the years aflame (we're yearning)
Burnmarks never fade (though we are)
Going nowhere fast
Never walk away
Never turn your back on me
Never walk out on me
Set the burning sails
Time weighs more than gold
More than shoulders can bear
All the years aflame
Burnmarks never fade
Going nowhere fast
Breathing barely audible while I watch you fighting sleep
But somewhere in the empty land, wolves among the sheep
And all the promises I've ever made seem to break at first touch
But that was then and all we've had is shattered for ever
Never walk away
Never turn your back on me
Never walk out on me

Eels- Electroshock Blues, not hard rock, and there are some instruemental moments on it, to boot.
The Eels also have this rare B-side called "Bad News", my god, now that song is a real killjoy.

Preferring "foetal" to "fetal" is just one more reason why you people no longer have an empire.

proof:
The moon is in the gutter
And the stars wash down the sink
I am the king of the blues
I scape the clay off my shoes
And wade down the gutter and the moon
The moon blinds my eye with opal cataracts
As I cut through the saw-mills and the stacks,
Leaping over the gully where I would one day take Lucy
Then wash up my hands in the gutter and the moon.
Such a long way from home, just me and
The moon is in the gutter
All my plans are flushed down the drain
I wander lonely as a cloud
Over memories at her mound
Then lie down in the bitter gutter moon.
