Ok, someone actually DID vote for it...
I didn't think there was someone deranged enough to think of the US as totalitarian and oppressive... you may think that the 2000 elections were undemocratic, and Bush is violating some people's rights by not giving them a trial, but it doesn't compare in ANY WAY to any of the other countries listed there.

The point that many people will vote for the US, even if they don't believe it, just to be a smart-ass?

The US shouldn't even be on that list. The only people who would vote for the US is Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden and some wacked out liberals from France and Germany.
The greatest threat to world peace is North Korea. Followed by China.

Fez, Why to you put DPRK ahead of China? Is it because of the imminent nature of the threat or the magnitude?

China seems a bit more at ease in the case of threatening the United States... they just don't do it as often as the DPRK does. Sure China and the US has had a ton load of problems in relations... it seems relations are cool. And China will not want to risk the up to $100 billion worth of trade it has with the US. (Let me recheck the numbers just incase, I brought up Asian/North American trade amounts before).

The People of North Korea suffer more than any other people outside of a African battle zone. People in those other countries listed (yes, even the US) don;t experience the same level of indoctrination and depravation North Koreans suffer.
Of course, Congo or Liberia are much better choices for worst hell hole on earth.
Edit: Lybia, Syria, Cuba, Iran are no more repressive than Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan. Why were these states left out?

GePap, I just couldn't imagine living in Congo. What's the average life expectancy there? Isn't it like 29 or 30?

My uncle was there for several months working for an aid organization.. he told me some terrible stories that have happened there. He was also in Burundi and Uganda aswell.
That is just about the life expectancy.

Millions of forced abortions per year, they run over peaceful protesters with tanks, you can be executed for starting your own political party, all reporters must agree to have state censors review their work, and they just happen to have the fastest growing military budget of any major state. Did I mention they have nukes?
Any guess of which country this is?

Oerdin, is this the same state that understates its military budget and overstates its agricultural output?

Well, the 'peaceful protestors with tanks' bit says China to me.
Of course you never hear about the protests in North Korea.

This is NOT a poll about "threats to world peace" or whatever. It's about how authoritarian and oppressive the government is.

Gepap - they were left off because I was putting down all the ones that came to me immediately. I'm trying to make a point, that those who complain about Bush being undemocratic, etc. really need to get a sense of perspective.

Ok, PDRK is probably the most oppressive but I still say PRC is the greatest threat to the world. Once they get advanced enough they're going to want to get onto the world stage and push out some of the more established powers just like Germany did beginning around 1900.

Oh, I don't know. Is this the same as the one that has millions of shootings a year, slaps funny labels on other countries, invades other countries willy-nilly, props up blood-thirsty dictators, profiles miniorities at home, ignores international laws, spies on everybody else, violates the Geneva Convention blatantly, got a president who snotted coke, evaded personal responsibilities, and stole an election, and has the biggest military budget in the world? Did I mention they have nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, and refused to ban landmines?

It's a tough choice between Iran and USA. On one hand, I dislike fundies. On the other, I think US presents a grave threat to worldwide democracy. Meh.

North Korea is among the worse hell-holes on the Earth, with only Liberia and Congo being worse (maybe also Sudan).
The difference between DPRK and this African shitholes is that the horrors, famines, indoctrination and suffering are actually engineered by a real totalitarian government. China's dictatorship is exceptionnaly mild when compared to their neighbour.

Face it UR. You live in an extrodinarially repressive country which is run by a regime who wouldn't bat an eyelash about killing millions of your countrymen if they got out of line.

I think it is beginning to change. The correct word here is now "thousands"
