I used to play a swedish spin off with a imho a much better system than the D&D. But, to answer the question: I'd say Ranger.

In the PC Games which based more on AD&D, like Spelljammer, I always went Cleric.

I mostly played AD&D 2nd edition. Usually did rangers or fighter/mages.
Although I did have a huge deal of fun with that chaotic neutral wild-mage...

I missed out when I was young - didn't have any friends who were interested.
I started playing with an adult group a couple of years ago. Great fun!
I've only played two characters to date - a human female barbarian named Pirl, and an elf male druid named Tharalon. I've played Pirl the longest, so that's what I picked here.
Other things I'd like to try:
Gnome Rogue/Illusionist - a trickster
Dwarven Fighter - a Battlerager!
Half Elf Ranger or Bard
Edit: All 3rd Edition

I played AD&D for the first time about a year ago
it wasn't as bad as I feared
I have played 1 3rd Ed AD&D campaign where I was a Bard (it was cool)
I have been playing NWN a lot recently, there I usually play a monk (but have also played a monk 1/paladin 1/sorceror x, you would be amazed at how high the saving throws are)
my 3 class character, at level 8 has items that boost her charisma +5 and Wisdom +1
he is
str 8
dex 14
constit 10
intel 8
wisdom 15
charisma 25
her saves are something like 15/15/16 (or maybe that was back at last level)

I play DnD sometimes. I don't have a good phantasy and role play skills, so I mostly prefer to be a human paladin.
Btw, it's Thief/Rogue. Rouge is some kind of make-up.

I still haven't played many NWN modules.
I have played Pool of Radiance. That was pretty good. I have also played amulet of Zeron. That uses hardcore rulest. That is mostly a dungeon crawl with little story, but pretty fun. And I have played Keep on the Borderlands. Also another pretty good module.
Oh and I played moonlight something or other. I can't remember the exact name. It was for higher level characters.
I hear the Penultima series is good, haven't tried it yet.
Go to http://nwvault.ign.com/index2.shtml and go to files/modules. The hall of fame modules should be pretty good. The ratings do seem good. I look for modules with the most ratings that are good. As anyone can get a few of their buddies to give the module good votes. So the more good votes the better.
