The proper way of drinking absinthe.
What is the proper 19th century way to drink absinthe?

I know they drank it with a piece of sugar and mixing it with water. Could someone decribe the ritual in detail?

All I know is that it's dangerous to drink and can lead to irreversible damage - maybe if not drunk properly

It's a drug that was popular among poets/atists/burgeois in europe in the 19th century. It's alcohol mixed with some herb.

Byron was wacked on the spirit of the Greek Revolution!

A propos, allegendly absinthe has a very similar taste and aroma to ouzo (the Green Fairy was produced in ancient Greece) without the special "mezmerizing qualities" of course.

There's no proper way of drinking it considering its taste...

Real absinthe has wormwood in it as well as alcohol. Wormwood causes very nasty irreversible brain damange if you drink too much of it. Why do you think Hemmingway became even more of a crap writter in his last years?

I have had it (the biggest market is the Czech Republic, were you find it everywhere, since all the tourists are interested, it being one of the few places you can find it) and the modern version is so high in proof (akin to 60% alcohol by volume) that all you 'taste' is alcohol really. The modern amount of wormwood is very small. Wormwood in theory increases bloodflow in the brain (hence the "increases my imagination" bit), but of course, since it does deal with the brain, it does cause damage.

As for the ritual (modern):

You take a spoonfull of sugar and you soak the sugar on a spoon with the liquor (make sure not to put it in the liquor). Then, light the spoon on fire, buring the alcohol away and partially caramelizing the sugar. Then mix the sugar in and drink. Most of this is simply for show and probalby has little effect on taste.

absinthe = ****ing evil

i think the proof of most absinthe is about 75%, rather than 60%, and it tastes awful

GePap knows his stuff, but in finland I have also seen people lighting the absinthe in their mouth, with or without the sugar.
