Hopefully,, the name change will result in a positive change for Infog, and not a negative one for Atari.
Atari has been a respected name, I just hope that it stays that way.

Atari was respected, but their last several forays into the field were flops. Jaguar?
Though I'm sure most people think of Atari fondly.
REally, any name would be an improvement. Hopefully they will find a new management philosophy (a good one) to match.

A new name doesn't mean anything, unless it is followed by changes in how the company acts.
The question is which company philosophy will be adopted: Atari, Infog, a combination of the two, or something totally different?
I would like to see the old respected Atari and/or even the early Infog come out on top, but only time will tell.

I heard, that a lot of the old 6502's ended in the AIM-9 "Sidewinder" missile. Now that mod would be fun.

Well, you're right, that was the point that I was trying to get at. Unfortunately, I would bet this change is merely cosmetic. They will continue to put out half-finished (or worse) games.

A friend of mine rebuilt a Commodore-64 to a portable synth by building in batteries, a speaker and playing music by the keyboard. Don't ask me how.

Nah, now it's tarnished. Oh well, I throwed away my old 800XL 3 years ago, anyway, so it doesn't really hurt me. The only thing I possess with the Atari logo on it is Neverwinter Nights.

Maybe if we're lucky they will buy out Bedhesa and and give Elder Scrolls the NWN graphics and interface
Oh well, here's to hoping for less crap...

I think it's one of the major players on the international level. They had financial trouble last year, but they overcame it IIRC

Atari lives again
Atari, one of the legends of video gaming, is back on the scene.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3010719.stm
The name has been revived by a French games publisher, which abandoned its Infogrames moniker in favour of the veteran brand.
The Atari name is the most revered in the gaming history, with a venerable repertoire of classic games such as Pong, Asteroids and Space Invaders.
"In any language, Atari is synonymous with video games and it's recognised for transforming entertainment," said Bruno Bonnell, Chief Executive Officer of Atari.
"Perhaps the greatest part of the Atari legacy is the recipe for creating games that capture an audience's imagination."
Chequered history
The Atari name dates back to the early 1970s, when Nolan Bushnell set up the company in California and released Pong.
It's the perfect moment in our history to make this change
Bruno Bonnell, Atari CEO
The huge success of the table tennis game with blocky black-and-white graphics went on to kick-start the video game industry.
Since then, Atari has gone through various incarnations. It has been owned by Warner Communications, now known as AOL Time Warner as well as by toymaker Hasbro, which sold it to Infogrames in 2001.
Infogrames had already started using the Atari label to publish some its games.
But it has now gone the whole way in an effort to boost its profile ahead of a big games industry show in Los Angeles next week.
Matrix game
The company decided to announce the change to capitalise on the release of a video game based on forthcoming The Matrix Reloaded film.
Atari is placing great hopes on the Enter the Matrix game, which goes on sale on 15 May to coincide with the release of the film.
It has shipped four million copies of the game worldwide and is available for the PlayStation 2, the Xbox, the GameCube and the PC.
The success of the game is widely seen as the key to the company meeting its sales forecasts.

Has anyone heard a rock band getting radioplay lately called the Ataris ? Meaningless coincidence?

Infogrames just took the name Atari. No management change, no anything else like that. They were just down on profits, and decided that Atari would be a better name. It's not as if they're actually going to improve their company any.

Infogrames, Atari, whatever, their games are the definition of potential wasted.

Nice way to lie to consumers, evil French. I wish Microprose was still part of Hasbro, like back in the good ol' Civ2 days.
