Is there any technology in Man's imediate future which will have a bigger impact.....
Then nano-tech, if so, what is it?
I was thinking about this, I cant think of any other technology which will open more doors then that.

Since nanotech is a unproven pipe-dream, I'd say just about anything. We still don't have robot butlers, after all.

we could build one, but why do that when it's less expensive to hire a person to do it?

I'd say Genetics Mastering. Beeing able to remove deficient genes and selecting "good" genes would have an enormous impact on our lives, and doesn't seem too far technologically from now (certainly less than nano-tech ).

Faster than Light Space transport would be better, allowing us to research a lot more of the universe, and find new biologies and elements.
It might also allow contact with alien intelligences far greater than our own (highly likely) and new technologies from these people.

I say fusion. Suddenly we will have a virtually unlimited, cheap source of electricity that doesn't pollute. This will likely lead to electricity being the power behind most things, including cars eventually.

A device that needs only a few drops of blood to determine the comprehensive health condition of that person.
A system that takes the previous device's output to compute what proteins and antibodies need to be produced to cure that person.

Teleportation.
But seriously, the only thing coming in the near future is in biotech. I haven't figured out how significant of a change it will be though.

Cybernetic implants, possibly. They are already on the horizon for pacemakers and diabetics

I think in the things that are well under-development at the moment, biotech, including genetic engineering (anyone missed the thread about making eggs from males or whatever) will take the cake.
Nanotech being second but not taht close.
Things like fusion, or quick travel in the universe or not close to breakthroughs IMO, and would take much longer to have an impact on society, than biotechs which makes us ask big BIG ethics question every year.

Lulthyme, good point. Imagine the ethics revolution we might get if human cloning actually works.

While fusion is currently not close to breakthrough, the very moment that it is, fusion reactors will start spreading around the globe like a plague. What electricity company wouldn't want to reduce its cost to make electricity?
The ethical component of biotechs will likely force them to be implemented much after the technical limitations are overcome.

I'd have to go with Fusion. Virtually unlimited, clean power would be transformative.

I don't know where to start! I've been watching too much Discovery Channel.. interesting stuff!
Especially from medical researches etc.. Oh man they're interesting right now, gene stuff etc. They're close to be able to grow spare parts for human soon, cloning from the original carrier (human) and then growing it to, let's say we need a heart or stuff like that. Maybe new eyes! They do that succesfully on frogs already and know how it should be done. They are making really cool stuff now, it's only matter of time when technology expands our lives sooo much more (at least the ones who are lucky enough to get to be part of this and getting treatments).
It's just so exciting. Also other gene technologies are coming, they're pretty hot stuff.
And of course by gene I mean DNA .
I think that the next one we really need is a new energy source though.. that would be a huge thing.

Or I don't know, maybe there are huge things coming from AI sector I don't know.. Maybe we can finally make robots and machines that does ALL the hard work for us and we can concentrate on coding them and posting here.

teleports would be cool too. It would make travelling cheap and effective for those who want it. Also it would be good for logistics for businesses.
Portable teleports would be so cool.. .

Bio-engineering could quite possibly have an even bigger impact upon the future of our species and the future of our major crops.

Not unproven at all. I think it's IBM who's currently working on nano-transistors for computers.

Stem cell research. I've read that they've had some success at growing new teeth from a person's own stem cells. It may be possible to grow complete limbs, or regenerate brain and nerve tissues using that technology.

Segway will blow all of these so called 'innovations' away. Cities of the future will be designed around them, I say!!! You laugh now, but I'll laugh last! You'll see!!!

They don't stand a chance in a typical Canadian winter. Pretty much the only place they won't wipe you out because of snow and ice is on the west coast.
